Banks / Credit Scores etc.?
I want to apply for a bank account but I don't have much of a credit record. There's nothign negative - just nothing much at all.
I have tried with First Direct and they refused me straight off. Does anyone know which bank might be more lenient?
Thanks

I'd try for a current account in a building society like Nationwide.Otherwise one of the big 4 like Barclays. Some companies, I suspect First Direct may be one of them, cherry pick their clients, they only want someone who is going to pay a good salary in each month.

Go to Natwest, and ask for a Step Current Account (they`ll try and get you onto a savings account, but you need to keep a minimum balance of £50 to keep the account open).

You should have no problems getting this, and from there you can work on building up a good credit history.

You can apply online, or its better to go into your local branch with photo id eg passport, driving licence etc, along with proof of address, such as utility bills (gas, water, electric). If these don't apply to you, contact the bank and they should be able to give you an alternative.

The step account comes with a debit card, and online banking, but nothing to get you into debt like a cheque book etc.

You can use it as the first point to get a good credit rating, after you`ve used it for a while, you can apply for a credit card etc.

Hope this helps!

Try your local credit union. They are sometimes much more lenient on this type of situation.

Neo
Citi bank are rather lenient with there scoring and there good to deal with.
But if you really want to search without the hastle then go to:
http://www.moneysupermarket.com
and they will have something for everyone, just search with your criteria and let the loan search engin do all the work.
hope this helps.

even with a bad credit rating you should get an account anywhere, just not one with benefits like an overdraft etc. go in to one of your local banks and just c if someone nice is on the desk and talk to them and c what they can offer.

my partner and i set up a joint account with barclays and even though we dont put a lot in the've still been good with us, but we have a really friendly person on the desk in our local branch who'll do anything 4u and get u whatever ur entitled to.

if u want a maestro / visa type card u might struggle with some banks. try viewing ur credt report online with someone like experian (free trial) and c what they think u should b entitled to.

hope it works out 4u

Try Abbey National, they are quite good. Stay away from B**c***s and N******t, they are very snobby and treat you like dirt! LLoyds TSB also very good and friendly.

You could try the Co-op. My sister in law was in the same situation as you and they have given her account. She only wanted it to set up a direct debit and all she needed was a pound and a few documents.

alatoruk
all high street banks have to give you a basic account. The government want everyone to get their benefits by direct payment so the banks have to give everyone accounts.
