Jenger | Best credit card for an 18yr old? |
Okay, so I recently turned 18 and I'm thinking of signing up for a credit card to build up my credit. I have an application for a Sovereign Bank Worldpoints Credit Card and I was wondering if this would be a good card for me to start off with. It was rated #1 for student credit cards..
Annual Fee - None
APR for purchases - 9.90%
Introductory APR for balance transfers - 2.9%
APR for bank and ATM cash advances - 19.99%
I also earn 1 point for every dollar in purchases. Those points are redeemable for rewards. (Which begin at 2,500 pts =( )
Any opinions on that card? Also, does anyone know of any other good starter cards? Perferrably one's with reward points.
Thanks

that actually sounds pretty good-better than my first credit card. I would just say no to the atm cash advance offers, those will get you in trouble.
p.s. you can help your credit score in other ways like paying uitilites, a cell phone bill, ect. credit cards aren't the only way to do it. |

It sounds like a good card. The interest rate sounds really good. Don't rely on points. Didn't you just say that pts are redeemable at 2500? That's $2500!! I'd tell my child to get the card with a $1000 limit. |

You'll earn much better rewards with other cards like the Citi mtvU card (5% in categories like restaurants, book stores, movie theaters, etc.; 1% elsewhere) and the Citi Driver's Edge for Students card (3% at gas/grocery/drug stores; 1% elsewhere).
However, to quickly see which student rewards card will pay you the most in rewards for your spending profile, you can use this rewards calculator:

When I was 18, credit cards filled my mail box. Just because you get credit cards offer with your name on it does not mean you qualify. You must establish credit - you must first pay a bank or credit card company a down payment (usually $100), and in return they will give you $300 limit credit card (this is call secure credit card). After a year or so, depending on how efficiently you used this credit card they will increase the limit (possibly to $1,000). This is called unsercure credit card. You are on your way to building a strong credit history. MAKE SURE YOU PAY YOUR BILLS ON TIME. If you're going to buy a new fancy car or a house in the future, a credit history will be vital. Good luck! |

American blue express credit card: Apart from no annual fee feature of the American Blue Express it also gives cash returns on specific purchases. Users of the American Blue Express also enjoy protection against fraud for online credit card transactions. This card tries to right the various wrong notions about the American Express credit cards, one of which is that it is a credit card only for rich or those who have money to keep a credit card. |

The interest rate sounds good for a newbie, but get in the habit of just PAYING OFF the bill each month. It is so easy to fall into the debt trap fast and then be getting out of the hole slow and more expensively. Get into the habit of looking at your statements each month and even set up a spreadsheet to track your expenses.
You might want to try American Express and see what they have to offer - I like their reward program. |
