Building credit wih credit cards...?
How long do you need to leave the balance on the card in order to build credit? For instance if I use it today, can I pay it off tomorrow and still build credit or exactly how does that work?

Its not a good idea.

Use it for small purchases and pay it off in full every month.

No matter what people say, leaving debt on your credit card is never a good thing.

For now don't make any purchases on your credit card that you cannot pay off in FULL when your bill comes in the mail.

In a while get a credit card with larger limit and repeat. Than your credit will be okay.

Best thing for your credit as of now (I am assuming you are in your late teens to early 20s) is buy a car and make payments on time.

Credit cards work kind of funny in the way that you're not really supposed to "need" them. The way to build credit with credit cards is with a good long history of good credit (having it) and using it responsibly.

So say your limit is $1000. That doesn't mean go out and buy $1000 worth of stuff and keep an unpaid balance. The balance means that is what you haven't paid back the bank that extended you the credit. It says to the creditors and credit reporting agencies that you are living beyond your means and you are a high risk.

What you need to do with your pretend $1000 limit credit card is buy something like once a month that is $100 or less. Buy gas, an outfit, a few bags of groceries and pay off that balance every month. You have to use it, because no activity suggests that you're poor and won't use it. Don't buy anything that you can't pay for THAT VERY DAY with what is in the checking account.

Do this for a few years and save yourself thousands upon thousands of dollars in interest on much larger purchases such as cars and real estate. The idea is long term discipline.

Regular, timely payments build credit. Paying early or on time does not affect that process.

You will get no rating if you
use your card and pay it off
the next day.

It would take 6 months

But you should open
a merchants account
at your bank and charge
95% of one of your credit
cards to your merchants
account.

After the money is in your
merchant account transfer
it to your savings account
so it will build interest.

You should not spend this
money because you may
need it to make your payments.

Before your first payment is
due, transfer the payment
ammount to your checking
account, and write a check
to make your first payment.
Make sure it will not be late.

Repeat thease steps over the
next 6 months, and you will
have a good credit rating
with your credit card company.

Your bank will pay your savings
account an interest payment
every 3 months, it is like 1-2
cents for every hundred dollars
you have in there.

But your credit card interest
will be more than that, I am sure.

After 6 months of making your
payments on time, your limit will
go up.

Your credit is brought up by making regular payments...the more higher the percentage of the total debt, the better. There is no point in paying the interest rates to get a good credit score. Your score will actually be better if you don't carry a balance...much better.

No--it works by you making payments-you can charge a small item say 100.00 and make payments for a few months--credit card companies can't make money by you paying it off the next day--you won't build up credit--call a financial adviser-your bank usually has one you can talk to for free-a good way to build credit is to put money into your savings account-then take out a small loan to equal it--say $500.00 using your savings account as collateral--put that money into your savings account too-then make payments on it--when you are finished making the payments you will have 1000.00 in savings and good credit-and it goes from there-

My friend has done just that, payed off the card quickly, and then eventually he had build-up his credit to have platinum.

Plus the money saved has somewhat to do with the credit line you can have.

DONT leave a balance. ALWAYS pay it in full at the end of the month. just because they dont make money off of you doesnt mean your going to have bad credit. whatever you buy make sure you have the money and can pay for it when your bill comes. dont buy anything you cant afford! just make sure to pay your credit card (at least the minimum, but full balance if possible) and NEVER be late. this will help you establish good credit. its also a good idea to not go over your credit limit. try and not to use more than 30% of your limit and you should be ok. for instance say you have a credit limit of $1000. then 30% of that would be $300. hope this helps! =]

Using credit cards to build your credit is the same thing as paying the bank for FICO points. Does that sound like a good deal?
