Can't pay interest on credit cards - what happens if I don't?
I have debt so extreme now that I can't pay the interest on my credit card bills. I used to have excellent credit (780!) two years ago, and then my life fell apart - husband trouble. What will happen if I stop paying the interest? Every time I pay 200 dollars to a card they charge me 100 in 'finance charges', so it is two steps forward one step back, and I feel as if this is no good at all, a waste of the little money I have got, that I need to feed the children. What will happen if I just stop paying the interest? I have no property of my own - there is nothing for anyone to take!

I don't have any wages for them to take. My husband left me with the kids. I haven't worked for twenty years; he told me I was useless and I lost all my confidence.

You need to make BIG changes in your lifestyle. Visit your local credit counseling agency, they will be able to help. If you stop paying, your credit will be ruined and you will have to declare bankruptcy. Avoid it if you can at all.

If you don't pay the interest then you will continue to owe more and more money.

I recommend listening to Dave Ramsey
http://www.daveramsey.com/radio/home/?strMode=listen

His show is live from 2-5 Eastern timezone

He has a good idea on how to manage debt, but your problem is not only your debt, but your amount of income. You will probably have to get a second job. I also recommend you call his show.

There's no way you can skip the finance charges when you make your monthly payment to the credit card. Try calling your credit card company and see if you can get a lower interest rate. Meanwhile, try to get a credit card somewhere else, where they offer you a lower interest rate. Under NO circumstances ever, skip a payment. This will only ruin your credit and also cause an increase in interest rates, your number one enemy.

Be very careful when you look for promotional deals on credit cards as they may incur a fee when they pay your balance on your other card. Another detail to watch for is longetivity of the low interest rate. They are usually excellent for six months, unless you miss or skip a payment then you "breach" the promotional deal and i/r skykrockets, beware!

Going through the financial turmoil after a divorce is tough! be strong and you will come out a conqueror! Note, this is possible if you also make drastic changes in your spending habits.

They could garnish your wages depending on which state you live in.

I believe there are different approaches to dealing with this:
1: Probably the best one is to call the creditors and try to work out something with them. see if they will lower you interest rate (or remove some of the charges), which will lower the finance charges. They would much rather take off some of the money than have you stop paying completely!
2: try to transfer the balance to a lower interest rate card. one of those "no interest for 6 months" deals would be good.
3: let it go to collections (by stop paying) and they may let you settle for 50-60% of the balance. this will ruin you credit though, but once you pay it off your credit will become better. If you stop paying and the balance is high enough, you may get sued..ouch. However, if faced with the choice of feeding your kids then the choice is obvious.

Gem,

See if you can sign up for a card with 0% interest on balance transfers for a year. Move as MUCH as you can to the new card and make no purchases on it.

A credit card is unsecured debt. If you stop paying, you credit will be flushed down the toilet. They will turn your account over to collections. Then they usually will offer to settle for 40% to 60% of the total amount owed. If you do not pay up on the offer, they will write your account off as uncollectable debt. They cannot seize your property or garnish wages because the debt is unsecured. But they will harass you and then your credit will be very terrible.

Visit with your local credit counseling places or look online for help. One such website I know of is careonecredit.com. They help people with this kind of problem as they work with both you and the credit card companies.

Good Luck!!

dont do the mistake of not paying the interest on cr card as it would keep on adding to the principle amount....take a loan and pay it off fully and break the cc and throw in the dust bin

You can't just stop paying the interest. If you're making payments, they'll apply it as they see fit.

If you're asking what happens if you stop making payments... they'll come after you. Even if you don't think you have anything to take, they can also garnish your wages. (And if you think you can't afford your payments now, you really don't want to see what they'll garnish!)

You could try calling them and asking them to work with you. Sometimes they will agree to drop the interest rates as long as you agree not to use the card anymore. Then much more of your payment would go toward the principal. (But if you make this agreement, do NOT use the card under ANY circumstances, or the deal becomes null and void.)

Noelle S
Call the credit card companies and see if they will work with you. Good luck!
