Can I deliberately overpay my credit card in advance?!?
Hiya,

My credit card is about to take a pounding as I'm going to be away for 2 months. To stop me going over the limit, I'd like to overpay it before I go so that I actually have more credit than the current limit - if that makes sense!! I'm taking cash and travellers cheques too, but I'm going to need the card for things like car rental, which will not be covered by my current card limit! Any suggestions??!! Many thanks!

Some credit cards do let you overpay, but how much depends on the card. 1 of mine allows $50, another $75 and another 0. Best bet is to ask for a higher credit limit. Have a good trip!

Yes. Although some companies will send you a check for the overage if it sits with a credit for too long.

I know one bank that wouldn't do this. How about a Visa debit card, or those pre-payment mastercards, if your bank won't do this for you?

whilst it is technically possible might i suggest you DONT DO IT.

if you buy something on credit card you are covered by the credit cards insurance, so if the company goes bust or refuses to deal with your problem, the credit card company has to cover it. However, if you buy something with "your own money" which pre-paying your card is, then you are not covered by the insurance because it is your money, not theirs that buys the goods.

Just call and ask for a higher limit. Or get another card. I think it's a good idea to have 2 cards anyway.

Call to ask for a higher limit and set up a direct debit. that way you'll be sure you won't pay late.

Spock (rhp)
yes -- you can do this.

you won't get any interest on the surplus funds, and it will prevent both those nasty fees and being turned down.

of course, with many cards there days, you can use the Internet from anywhere to send in a payment from your checking account.

I would say it depends on the credit card. I once overpaid mine by mistake and they sent me a check. One of those prepaid Visa card might work. Why don't you call the credit card company and find out?

yes u can over pay, but sadly u get any interest on it, if u r nervous about bein stuck abroad without enough funds, perhaps u can ask ur card company to raise ur limit to an amount ur happier with and even if u will be happier to over pay on that aswell.
pleasant journey.

Check with your provider first. They may suggest you increase your limit You could make the point to them that since you'll be away when the bill comes, you won't be able to make the payment on the due date. (They'll suggest a direct debit. Resist this! A standing order is OK because you tell your bank how much, and when, to pay; a direct debit authorises the payee to help themself.)
I noticed recently that the Post Office has introduced a charge card for travellers which does exactly what you describe - you preload it with money which is then available to spend. I haven't looked into it in any detail, but it might be a solution.
