Can I legally be sued for debt for something that was before I was a legal adult?
Here is my situation (bare with me!)...
4 years ago I started college at a very pricey insitution. I didn't necessarily want to go there but my dad liked it so I decided to go there. Once I was there for a month or so I realized that I was not happy and decided to abruptly leave. I was naive and didn't understand the concept of college or that it costs a lot of money. (No, I'm not a snot nosed kid... my dad was taking care of getting the Finanical Aid worked out, etc). I didn't know anything about the tutition or how college worked finanical wise. My parents didn't either as I was the first to go to college. Anyways, apparently I owe this college over $5,000. I understand debt, trust me... I've learned A LOT since then. But my question is-- I was seventeen at the time. Not technicially an adult. (I am not trying to get out of it just trying to learn some facts). I know in past issues when I was not of age yet with medical bills that I myself could not personally be sued. I could be completely wrong. I wasn't even old enough to have a credit card at the time or let alone stay about past 11 by state curfew. I have since gone to a different college and will graduate is May and I have been paying my own tutition but now I'm being threatnened that I'll be brought to court. Does anyone have any suggestions?

no no- i didn't actually get the finanical aid! i OWE the money for being at the school. i owe it directly to the college not a loan!

Debt doesn't go away. The money is owed, and the college wants to get paid.

Here's the issue: you were not of legal age to take on indebtedness, since you were not of legal age to sign any contracts. That's good for you, not so good for your folks.

Your folks probably signed the contracts for your education, making them liable for the five grand. That said, the college will probably sue your folks next.

You have to be 18 to 'sign' into a Legal contract. Unless a parent co-signed something about the fees/expenses ect-you should be off the hook.

Of course always best to check with an attorney-but I think you don't have to worry

A minor cannot make a leglly binding contract.

If the company gave you financial aid at seventeen then no a minor cannot be bound into a legal document such as a financial aid application. You should be all set as long as your parents were not co-signer's then they will have to pay.

Who signed the loan papers? That is who is the debtor....Ask if you can go back and go to school...since you dropped out...never hurts to ask...

You can

You would be responsible for the debt.
If you got financial aid through the institution (or a private loan) you signed a MPN, or master promissory note. These can be signed by typing your name on the form in the computer, so you might not have signed an actual piece of paper.
Anyways, to get the college to loan you money they state several times that you must pay it back...although you usually don't have to start until 6 months after you graduate.
Without more information and knowing what kind of loan this was, it's pretty impossible to tell all the regulations. Did you or your parent sign for it? What was the money given for?

The money owed is not a loan, right?
Then it is the tuition for the full time schedule of classes that you signed up for but never attended or did attend a class or two but still you didn't cancel or drop out OFFICIALLY.
Or is it the cost of room and board in the dorms?
In any case, since it is such a large amount of money for you and probably a fairly big deal to parents, I suggest a consultation with a lawyer.
Get the College's course catalogue for the year you attended preferably and read the policy concerning dropping or discontinuing classes. This way you can see exactly what the school says that you and /or your folks are liable for.
Whatever you do, do not ignore this. These things follow you and make it harder to get credit or a job or even an apartment.

i can't think you would be held for it but i would check with lawyer and the fact maybe your dad did it signed if he did hes libel.
