Can I retain current credit history if return to my maiden name after divorce?

teenriodoll
Yes, you can if your credit is completely separate from your soon to be ex-husband. The law that covers this is the Equal Opportunity Credit Act and it is designed to ensure that you can have a separate credit profile. Actually you can use it now. Take a look on your credit report and separate out everything that is yours from your husband. Write the credit bureaus and after you research the Equal Opportuinty Credit Act you have your ammunition to change your report. If you have something joint then instead of closing the account (that can kill your credit score) instead have your divorce attorney negotiate that one of you will keep the account and then get the current creditor to agree to carry it in one person's name also.

I hope this helps you.

Good Luck

Nitris
Absolutely. Credit history is based on your social security number.

butterflyspy

your credit is attached to your SS#

amandaangel1
It should be retained because your social security number will still be the same, which is something that credit agencies go by I am pretty sure. Your credit history follows you forever :)

twistedsingle
Yes, its attached to you ss number but make sure the bills that were in both of your names are taken care of

Campbell Gramma
even if you change your name, your social security number will be the same.....the credit history should also be...
