Can I use my debit card to purchase stuff online?
I was given a debit card from my bank and I was told that I can use it as a credit card too. It looks exactly like a credit card, it's a Mastercard, it has 16 digit number and an expiration date as well. I used it in several retail stores as credit and the money was taken away from my bank account.

I am confused whether I can use it online to buy softwares etc. Please help, I saw a great deal online for limited time and I want to buy it.

Yes, you can use it anywhere you can use a credit card. You should be very careful about using it online though. If someone gets a hold of that number and charges stuff on it, they will wipe out your checking account (this means your checks could bounce!). It is very hard to get a bank to give you that money back.
With a normal credit card, they have a whole system in place for you to dispute charges. It is very much easier to get fraudulent charges removed from a credit card than it is with a debit card. Some banks have changed the way they work with fraudulent charges and stuff, but it might be too late...you may not notice the fraud until your rent check bounces.

A debit card removes the money directly from your bank account. When you use a credit card you are billed monthly and can pay the minimum, the entire charge or any amount in between. You can use your debit card to purchase software online but it will be removed directly (at that moment) from your bank account. Keep careful track or your may end up being overdrawn and that costs a lot of money. You should request a separate charge card.

Yes you can. Your debit card has a visa or mastercard logo on it and that is what you put in the spot for what type of card you have.

the answer is yes. the only difference is when you use it as a debit the money is taken immediately. when you choose it as a credit it take 2 or 3 days. some people use this option in order to pay something or buy today when they know they are going to have money tomorrow.
the only thing is if you do not have money in the bank at the time the payment is accredited you are going to have an overdraft fee, usually 30 bucks, so be care full because if this happen several times then, when you apply for a credit card you are not going to get the best interest. besides there's always a better deal when you are going to buy something

Yes, it works the same as a credit card, but be careful some "crooked" site may keep trying to charge on you card. The debit card is connected to your bank account. so you're actually giving access to your bank account. Think first?

Yes I use mine all the time as a credit card.
Only if it really requires credit does it not work..like renting a car for instance...

yes, if a card has a credit card logo, then it can be used as such, i shop online all the time

Yes.
To those poster who said there is no protection for debit cards. There is but you got to notify your bank faster.

According to the news the banks must give you provisional credit within 7 business days of the dispute. The banks have a total of 60 days to investigate but must send you a status letter after 30 days. This applies in the U.S.

MasterCard & Visa also have a zero liability policy in the U.S.

A lot of banks do forget this rule in the U.S.

unauthorized transfers involving only your debit card number (not the loss of the card), you are liable only for transfers that occur after 60 days following the mailing of your bank statement containing the unauthorized use and before you report the loss.

You said yourself it's a Mastercard. Do you just not know what a Mastercard is?

If the store uses Mastercard... and you have a Mastercard... put two and two together please, I'm about full on stupid questions for today.

And I also would like to add that whomever said that debit cards don't have debt protection doesn't know what they are talking about, which I find often here. Most banks do offer theft protection on it. Now if you bank at grandmas midwest corner bank, maybe it won't.

buy it online. That's nearly the dumbest question i've heard on here all week

YES... it's exactly like a credit card but the money comes right out of your checking account so make sure you have the balance to cover the purchases. The only thing to watch out for with a debit card is when you use it as a credit card at a retail store. You usually have the option to select credit (meaning you sign) or debit (you enter Pin ID Number). Some banks charge you more when you use the debit option. That won't apply to online purchases but something to watch out for as those fees accumulate fast. Also using the card as a credit card, sometimes you will be asked for what's called a CVV or Security Number from the back of the card. Make a note of that number while you can still read it because it fades quickly and some vendors will need that to process through their bank to verify the card is in your possession. On a Visa/Mastercard it's a 3 digit code on the back by the signature panel... make a note of it.

Do not use it online. Since it is linked to your bank account/CASH, you don't want to put that number anywhere on the Internet.

You can get a credit card that is not a debit card for online pruchases. A standard credit card offers you protection against credit card fraud.

If anyone uses your debit card without your permission, you're out the cash until your bank does an "investigation" and it can take months for them to get your money back for you.

Most banks say that it's not a good idea to use your ATM/debit card to purchase things online. ever. Don't do it.

Yes you can, I do all the time. As long as your card has been activated as a debit card, as well as a ATM card, then you can use it just like a credit card.

Chali
Yes, you can use it exactly like a credit card, except that you must have the money in the bank to back up the purchase. That means you can make an online purchase, but be wary. Using your debit card for online purchases is riskier than using your credit card for online purchases. Easier to steal the numbers and use if you have a history of online purchases.

Yes, you can use your debit card online. Just remember that you do not have the same "rights" that you would have if you used a normal Visa, Mastercard, or Amex. With Visa, MC, AMEX you can more easily contest charges and sometimes can extend your warranty. Deal only with reputable online merchants.

u can use it to buy stuff offline

Yes you can, but you won't have the same fraud or theft protections. It's really rather foolish to use a debit card online.
