Can Sears deny me employment because of my credit after they hired me?
I recently got hired by Sears as a cashier....on the condition that I pass the drug test and the background check. I'm not worried about either of those things, I don't do drugs nor have a criminal record. What I am worried about is my credit. I have less than perfect credit. I recently looked at my credit report and it has 4 negative items on it, all of them being late paying my bill, 30 days past due. I'm only 20 years old, and those past due credit card bills were from when I was 18.

So my question is....even after they hired me technically (I filled out my tax forms and everything) can they still deny me employment just because my credit isn't so great?
Additional Details
Also, would it have been a good idea to mention my credit situation to the manager that hired me? I almost wanted to call her to tell her, but didn't know if it was a good idea.

In my opinion only -

4 two year old lates aren't major enough for them to deny you the job.
If you had charge offs, repo's, judgments, etc., reporting then, yeah, I could see those types of negatives as a problem.

I don't know if I would call her about it unless she had specifically asked you if you had anything negative on your credit reports during the interview. If she had, then you might call her and talk to her about them.

Good luck and enjoy the job

I really think you can relax. What they are looking for are major hits to your report, like bankruptcies and judgments.

But they really do not care about the credit problems of an entry level employee like a cashier. It's when you get promoted to upper management that they will pay attention to such stuff.

So relax and concentrate on doing a good job. If you show up for work every day, that will impress them far more then a couple of minor hits on your credit.

Typically a credit check is part of the background check. More and more employers are using credit checks to for employment screening, especially jobs handling money or accounts.

Technically, they can terminate you for any reason, including bad credit. However, 4 negatives from two years ago probably isn't bad enough to keep them from hiring you.

I dont see you getting fired for a few lates that are very old.

The reason for credit checks (in my opinion) is kind of simple. They want to make sure you dont have 120 day lates (that are currently late) or chargeoffs. THese usually are signs of mismanaging money. If an employee cant manage his/her own money properly, what's to say that the company money will be managed or counted or taken care of properly?

Now once you get the job if you all of a sudden have bad credit, I'm prettys ure they cant do much.

4 negatives of 30 days probably won't stop them from hiring you. If you had lots of -120 days, or I10s or R10s, it might. As long as those accounts have been paid on time since, it's more than likely OK. However, for jobs requiring handling of money or securities, companies can be very strict about credit issues.

I don't think they can fire you because of your bad credit. They didn't express concerns over it when they hired you, so I'm sure you are fine.

Did Sears mention on their application or in person that they will perform a credit check? If not, you shouldn't worry. But, I wouldn't be surprised that they would do a credit check because you were hired into a position that will handle money on a continual basis. And companies have fired people once they've received a job for failing to comply with their hiring standards. So it is possible. But I agree that with others that these 4 instances of 30 days late from 2 years ago probably won't matter. And if there isn't any other negative remarks on your report, then you really shouldn't be worried. Sears will see that you are currently responsible with your finances and won't steal. And if they didn't ask you about your credit history, then you didn't have to offer it.

I've never heard of anyone being denied employment due to bad credit unless a) They worked for a financial institution dealing with large sums of money or b) their credit was simply horrible.

Usually if you pass drug test and have no criminal background, they don't pay much mind to your credit check.

From you question it doesn't sound like either of those scenarios fit you, so you should be fine.

I have been denied a job because of my credit before. Not sure if its legal or not, but they will find another way to not hire you. Their thinking is if you cant handle your own money, why should they let you handle theirs.

freddy
No. personal credit is not part of a job application. That's why we get jobs, to better our credit.
