stayc | Can a cell phone plan build your credit? |
I recently got a 2 year contract in my name. I don't have any credit (I just turned 18 a few months ago) but they ran a credit check and I was somehow approved for a contract with T-Mobile. I got the Flexpay (contract version, as stated) which is a combination of prepaid and a regular plan. You pick your contract and the features and pay for it before the month starts. It protects you from overages but if you need more minutes for the month you can buy a refill card. it is NOT considered a prepaid plan.
I was wondering, will it build up my credit if i pay the bill on time (or even early)????
I have already paid for it 4 months in advance.
thanks

A contract on your cellphone won't help you build your credit. It can though ruin your credit if you stop paying your bill and you are reported to a collections agency. If you want to build your credit you have to get a credit card. If you are a student and you have a checking account at a bank you can get a student credit card. Student credit cards are normally between 500 to 1000 dollars. A very good factor about them is that they have a higher acceptable rate than a regular consumer credit card. If you don't qualify for that, which does happen, than you could try getting a secured credit card. A secured credit card is a card where you deposit money into it and get a credit based on the amount of your deposit. You make payments and you treat it the same way you would a regular credit card; paying your minimum payment on time. After a year it converts to a regular credit card and your credit limit is extended and you get your deposit back. |

I would think so. especially with other cell phone companies. however, it might take time. |

yeah t mobile is pretty easy to get approved by. I didn't have much credit before I signed up with them either. Yes a phone plan does build your credit if you pay on time..I'm not too sure about a flex plan though...it might be since you said its not considered pre-paid. |

Many cell phone plans don't actuall report the credit, unfortunately, unless you are going to be collected on. |

well i believe so, if they check your credit i am sure they can report credit also. |

No, it will not build your credit. You're not borrowing money from them, you're purchasing a service.
It will ruin your credit if you don't pay though. They'll report it, so others will know not to lend to you. That's the reason they checked your credit. If you're not paying on credit cards and didn't pay on previous utilities, they'll either have you leave a deposit or not open an account for you. |

an actual cell phone plan will... but not this one. a person with good credit is some one that pays everything on time, but since you pay in advance it doesn't give you credit, increase it or lower it. hope that helped.
