Always check their policies, I find most companies don't charge your credit card until they're ready to despatch |

Yes they can and do. Some companies will charge on the day they actually despatch the goods others will charge as soon as you place the order. Most will not even accept your order until they have checked with your card company that the information you have given is valid. I don't know about Mastercard but Visa allow the supplier of goods to mark a debit on your record as soon as you order. It won't necessarily appear on your statement at that point but it will be marked against your credit limit. |

Think about it! The money is collected by computer when you order. By you if you use the internet and by the operator if you do it over the phone. The goods will be dispatched from somewhere else, maybe a different country, and the people doimg the dispatching won'y have any contact with the people taking the order. Even the polite email you get telling you that it's out of stock or the lorry's crashed are sent from the computer without anyone actually typing the message.
The name at the end of the message may not be an actual person-just a file name. |

Yes they can .. are they SUPPOSED to ? NO they are NOT ..
However, exactly how would it be possible to stop them ?
(all they have to do is state your package is waiting for the Postman to collect ...) |

The company charges the amount to your account as soon as you order.......if they send the item and then charge it to your account and the card is then rejected they don,t get their money.....and probably wouldn,t get the item back either |

If you willingly give your credit card number, the company can charge you anytime afterwards, up to 1 year from the transaction date. |

They can because by giving them the info you gave them the permission |

Yes, you authorise payment when you supply your card details. |

Yes the company can debit from your credit card before the goods are dispatched. |

Yes. They will take it as a point of sale transaction unless you have arranged a cash on delivery transaction. Your card company should offer you protection from fraudulent transactions and failure to deliver/provide goods falls into this category. Lost by the shipping company/post is a matter between the supplier and the carrier, not you and the supplier. Check your conditions of use. If they do not include this type of cover change to a card that offers this service. It should be free. |

Of course they can...how else are they supposed to get paid for sending you the goods? |

Within the finance industry banks set down codes of practice many vary on this matter but most clearly state goods must be dispatched within 3 - 5 days unless its a deposit or for goods that are of special order like goods made to order which must be dispatched within a reasonable time period.
It is common practice to authorise paymnt at time of order to ensure funds are there be order is fully processed. |
