Danielle B | Can a credit card company randomly raise your APR for no reason? |
I have a credit card and just looked at my statement- my APR doubled.
I called the company and they said they can't tell me why, due to 3rd party something or another, but will mail me the reason, which will take 7-10 days. They said they sent prior notification, but I got nothing.
I (and the rep I spoke to) did not see any missed payments, and I always paid over the minimum.....can they do this to you? |

yes they can, that's what a variable APR is |

They can do it and do it all the time. I suggest since you did nothing wrong to call them and tell them you are going to cancel the card and switch to another credit card company. That usually works when they are trying to pull one over on you. |

Yes, they can. They didn't gurantee any particular interest rate in contract to you, and as such, they can change it any time for any reason. That is one of the reasons why borrowing on your credit card is a very bad idea. |

They can do whatever they put in the agreement. But, you usually can freeze the old APR if you agree to close the account. You'd continue making payments until the balance is zero. |

Yes, with some credit cards they have a disclosure when you first get one stating in small letters that blah blah your apr may increase periodically. Just another way for them to get money from those that don't notice. |

yes they can. they usually send you a notice in the mail by way of those little fliers with all the fine print on them. |

if it is a varialbe card they can basicly charge you whatever intrest rate they want, avoid this by paying off by the end of the month or negociate your rate |

Ok, you paid your payments on time & at least what they asked for. No problem. Now, what about your other creditors. Did you go delinquent with any of them? By delinquent I mean 1 late payment or short pay on a payment. If so, every credit card application states they can periodically check your credit history &, if they see you were delinquent anywhere else -- ANYWHERE -- they can raise your APR anywhere they wish up to the highest they have on their cards. This is legal because you agreed to it in the application, in the contract you signed & by signing your credit slips. Deal with it. Pay your bills on time or, here is an odd idea, USE CASH!!! |

To add to that list, some CCs may also increase your APR depending on your credit score. They periodically review not only your credit, but also your payment history - which is not limited to that one credit card with that institution. Also, you have to make sure that you're making payments that's more than the minimum due - or that you vary the amounts of your payments (and still manage to pay more).
Hope this bit helps. |
