MMM | Can an employer check your credit without prior approval? Can they base decisions based on someone's credit? |
|

Yes. |

Not without prior approval, but most applications include a statement that credit may be checked. They can base hiring decisions on credit information. Most people would argue that your credit score reflects upon how dependable you are. |

Usually part of a background check and of course they can base a hiring decision on a bad credit history for a lot of jobs. |

they can't check without your approval. and yes, they can based their decision on your credit. |

They can certainly base decisions on someone's credit.
And yes, they could check your credit rating IF THEY COULD USE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. They have it, but they cannot legally use it for anything other than communication with the feds regarding your payroll or in communication with insurance agencies.
So, although unless you gave them explicit permission to use your social security number for a credit check, they don't have enough information to perform the check.
Short answer: No, not without your approval. |

In the US they must obtain a credit check permission of some form prior to running a credit check. These can sometimes be hidden in background check forms as well as a stand alone forms. They can base decisions on information they collect. The reasoning is usually based not on bad decision but allowing them to see what pressures you are under. If your a bank would you want your Teller to be severely in dept therefore tempted? |

Yes, employment and housing decisions can be based on credit in most states. Any company that checks credit has you check a box ok'ing it on the application for employment. Usually it is called "consumer reports" when you are told to check it as yes or no. |

oh yes they can, i was working at a car dealership in chicago and the manager told me she would'nt hire my friend due to the fact she had bad credit like to high visa bill's etc,,,,but i do believe she did not ask her approval, it probably made it easier because where we worked we had the means to pull up anyones credit at anytime, pretty sneaky huh? i think it's a total bull s--t but there getting away with to much obviously we need a job if we are going to be able to pay are bill, thus, not having bad credit right? |

they can but they shouldn't since a person's credit history is no bearing on how they are able to do a job. what if someone got laid off and got behind in bills and their unemployment ran out? you also see employers doing this more in the finance industries. |

In order for any employer to run your credit they have to have your permission first. When you started if you signed any paperwork which stated they have a right to run your credit and a background you have given them permission. And yes they can base your employment on your credit ! Some cases Bank credit unions etc have to be able to bond the person for any position bonds are based on credit and background! |

well there is the freedom of information you can call for complete details on that.
but I don't think they can see your credit without your authorization. but they may be able to decide your job on it, if it calls for that. |

The average employer does not check credit unless it is directly related to the job you are applying for.
It should have appeared on the application or they should have told you prior to checking. |

Yes, they very well can. Most often now days, an employer will have you sign a sheet, and take the drug test etc. In that set of papers, if not the paper you signed for the drug test, will be a part to check your credit. I'm a Finance Director for a
large Auto Dealerships. They just don't want the problems, with people owing a lot of debt, "that are way behind, and don't pay their bills!" I was told that, per the man that just hired me, last week! I left Honda after 16 years! I can understand, if that person will be dealing with money etc. However, there are so many people suffering out there right now, I don't feel that should be a basis for them hiring you or not!! It's wrong !! I feel. If they like you, you fit the job, they should hire you! They also do a criminal background. Oh Yes, that is also, in the papers you sign with the drug test. They will then know your clean, and have no criminal record as well. Including speeding tickets etc. If your behind in bills, that should not hold up a respectable place of Business from hiring a person. You may want to tell them, if you have a few problems, and let them know, up front. That never hurts, as honesty is the best policy. Most people will understand, that a lot of people have fallen on hard times, and will give you a chance. Good Luck to You!! |

An employer can not check your credit without your consent. You have to fill out a pre authorization consent form before because the credit bureau will ask for those forms when it is for employment purposes. Unfortunately an employer can base their hiring decisions on someone's credit (it is unfair) especially if you are working at a bank or working with cash. good luck! |

it depends on the company your going to work for. they usually tell you somewhere on the application that they verify credit history. for example, if your getting a job where handling a lot of cash is involved, i suppose they do this to check peoples credibility some how (as if bad things don't happen unexpectedly to responsible people sometimes) |
