Can anyone make an argument for the use of credit cards?
I cannot find one reason people use credit cards instead of just paying cash. It appears to me that it is just playing with snakes, and even incentive cards have high interest rates and outrageous fees.

There is no good reason except immediate need gratification.

The ATM visa or mastercard has the same protections as a credit card. Anything you can do with a credit card you can do with your debit card so you can rent a hotel, or whatever and not carry a wad of cash.

If you pay cash you don't care about a credit score. A credit score just means you have debt.

If you have no credit card bills you probably have money in savings for emergencies.

All those perks credit cards give are better for them than you. Visa has one know where if you buy 7 meals from burger king you get a free meal. Big deal.

You can get a manually underwritten mortgage without a credit score.

People who pay with credit cards tend to spend 35 percent more than people who buy with cash.

If you buy with cash then you probably have a budget so you know exactly where your money is going

Pay the bill off each month an it does not matter if the interest rate is 500%

This one is easy. I use credit cards all the time.

I don't care what the interest rate is, just the reward program. You see, I don't spend what I don't have. So I pay off the credit card every month and never pay a penny of interest but get back money, gift certificates, etc.

You cannot rent a car without a credit card.

You cannot make an airline reservation without a credit card.

Those seem like good reasons to have a credit card, in my opinion.

You know, you can get a credit card that doesn't have annual fees. You can also get some pretty competitive interest rates. And if you pay off the balance every month, the interest rate is a moot point anyway.

People who spend irresponsibly give credit cards a bad name. But there is definitely a time and a place for them, and if you use the wisely, they can be of great benefit to you.

I pay with credit cards, and pay them off in full each month. I don't spend more than I can pay off.

The credit card pays me 1% (or more) back for my purchases (5% on my gas purchases)

I am what the card issuers call a "deadbeat" because I pay my card in full each month, and they don't get any fees out of me.

I have the bill payed automatically out of my checking account so I don't forget to pay a bill and get hit with late charges or interest.

If you're able to use a card like this, then I think it makes sence. If you end up paying intrest on the card, then forget about it... it's a very expensive way to borrow!

Easy
1- You can borrow money short term without paying interest if you paid in full.
2- Building your credit
3- Get rewards such as air, car, hotel, cruise, merchandise, gift cards and cash
4- Easy to dispute when you're not satisfy with the merchandise. Credit card company can help you not to pay for it. If you paid with cash, chances are the merchant already had your money, they may not return the money.
5- Lots of cards without annual fee (I never paid for one)
6- Loose your cash, you can't get it back. Loose your credit card, you can report the card lost and stolen and not responsible for any fraudulent charges.
7- You can't buy anything on line with cash nowadays, they all require credit card. You can use check of course but they want to make sure the check is good before they ship the merchandise.
8- If you are a responsible person, whether credit card or cash, you still can manage your finance without any problems..

If you know how to manage your finance, credit card can be very helpful.

You are using somebody else's money as long as you pay the balance off each month. In addtion, it is easier to return something than if you wrote a check for it. You also the right not to pay for it if it is damaged.

Easy.

Cash back.
Reward miles.
Never having to carry lots of cash.
Paper trail.
Build your credit score.
Use someone else's money interest free.

The only trick to credit cards is do not spend over 30% of your credit limit in any given month and pay them off in full every month.

it is a good way to built up your credit -- you use it just like a debit card -- keep a running balance and when the payment is due you pay off the whole balance -= there are times believe it or not when you can not use cash == rental cars, some hotels, and when you buy tickets on line at one of the discount places.. but you are right == case in point(1) joe will come on and say how can he get a credit card -- three months later( 2)how can i raise my limit four months later (3) i have missed several payments can they really screw up my credit (4_ four months later how can i file a chap 7 or 11.

they should only be issue to people who know how to manage there money

It is convenient, I dont ever have cash anymore on me. It is an easy way to build credit quickly if you do not misuse your card.

pockethotrod
People use credit cards because it is faster and more convenient than cash. And they use it to boost their credit score (paying bills on time)
But those are just about the only benefits you'll ever get. Debit/Check cards are much better than credit cards. No interest, and you pay from your checking account. And they're just as fast and convenient.

heybulldog
I dont see any reason to have a credit card.

People that say they pay off the cards every month are just fooling themselves. You spend more when you use plastic. There is no emotion involved. Mcdonalds said that when they started taking plastic that the average transaction went from $4.75 to $7.00.

"Would you like a hot apple pie with that?"
"NO THANKS!"

You can rent a car or book a hotel room with a debt card same as a credit card. As well as a paper trail if thats what you want.

If you play with snakes sooner or later your gonna get bit.

Im using someone elses money interest free. What a joke.

You have to borrow money and pay back interest monthly to have and keep a high fico score (I LOve Debt Score).

if i buy a new sofa and i get it delivered but it never gets to me and the company says they did, i just call my credit card company and cancel the payment, theres the peice of mind, then if they want they send a person to see if i wasn't lying and being that i dont have what i ordered, i dont have to pay anyone anything. plus people can steal your money, but if they steal your card, you just cancel and ur money is safe

hmm, as someone who recently filed bankruptcy, I cannot find any pros to credit card use. Instant gratification regardless of price???
