weeleesie | Can anyone recommend a good credit card? |
I've never had one before so don't know where to start! Am also worried about getting turned down cos I have no credit history. Additional Details I should probably give more detail than I did...
I don't plan to use it too often, but need it as a safety net. I have had a lot of outgoings recently (this should settle down in the next couple of months). But I seem to be getting into the red every month.
I was fine until I got laser eye surgery a couple of months ago. It cost £3k, but I couldn't get it on interest free credit because I had no credit history. I therefore had to empty my savings to pay for it (hence the cash flow problems now). I do not have my own house or car at the moment, so banks have nothing to go on cos i don't pay a mortgage or anything.
I swore i'd never get a credit card, but think I have no choice at the moment! |

Unfortunately, most people need credit to buy homes, cars, etc... Therefore, you will need to establish a credit history. The best way to do this is to obtain 2 credit cards. Use them very sparingly and wisely and you will develop a great credit history. Ignore everyone here telling you not to get a credit card unless you have the cash to pay for everything for the rest of your life and you can buy everything you need in cash, such as a car and a home. The easiest credit cards to obtain to start with are department store credit cards and a Capital One credit card. Rates are not good but if you don't use them very much and pay them off before the end of the month you don't pay interest. Also, these do not carry annual fees in most cases. Read the credit blog below for more information on building your credit and using credit wisely. |

It depends what you are looking for. Assuming you aren't a knucklehead who runs up crazy expenses and you plan on paying the balance in full every month, get a card that either gives you cash back, i.e. discover card OR get one that gives you airline miles. There are lot of cards that simply offer you low finance charges, but I wouldn't bother getting a card for that. Even without history, some bank will issue you a card because they can reduce their exposure by giving you a low limit to start. Just remember, don't use the card if you cannot afford it with cash and you will never have a problem. Don't listen to all this doomsday talk in this forum. |

Based on the fact that you're saying you need the credit card to keep you out of debt each month, I would suggest against it. You should never view your credit card a short term loan or "line of credit" (which in fact it actually is). If you use it like this, and don't pay the balance in full every month (not just the minimum payment) you're gonna get slammed with finance charges and end up going further into debt. If it's just due to the lasik surgery and you think you can climb back out of debt in a few months, then I'd suggest going for a card that has a 0% APR introductory period. But make ABSOLUTELY SURE you pay AT LEAST THE MINIMUM PAYMENT every month during the introductory period (if not you will be considered in default and your APR will skyrocket to sometimes over 30%). Also make sure that you can PAY OFF THE BALANCE IN FULL before the 0% introductory period expires. Otherwise you will then start incurring finance charges. This should give you enough time to save up for repaying your lasik and get back into the black. Then you can make sure to pay your CC balance in full every single month to build credit history and avoid finance charges altogether. And if you get really good at this then you can go for a rewards card (which have insanely high APRs but since you're disciplined enough to pay your balance in full every month on time then this won't matter) and the CC company will actually pay you to use their card (to the tune of 1-5% depending on the category you're spending in)! |
