Can creditors still come after you even if the 7 years are up?
I was stupid when i was young and messed up my credit. My 7 years went by and now my credit is good, but today I got a suprise letter from a collector about $500 dollars I owe from 1998? I just laughed and hung up. Whats up with that? Tens year latter? What?

You have two time lines mixed up.

The 7-years comes from the Fair Credit Reporting Act which says that derogatory accounts can be reported for 7-years from the date of first delinquency.

Then there is the statute of limitations which is the time limit for a creditor to sue in court and varies from State to State and by type of debt.

Even after the S.O.L. has passed, creditors can still come after you for a debt, they can even sue you in court but all you have to do is show the court that the S.O.L. has expired and the case will be dismissed.

Never admit that a debt is yours, in some States even doing this will restart the S.O.L. and any time you pay a dime on a account it restarts the S.O.L.

They can still try to get you to pay, but they may no longer have a legal basis to do so if your state's statute of limitations has elapsed. But that won't stop them from trying to scare you into paying.

Find out if the SOL has elapsed. If it has, ignore them and forbid any further contact.

You may also want to make sure that they do not have a judgement against you. Most creditors won't go to court for only a $500 debt. But its something to check since, in some states, a judgement can last for up to 10 years. Better to be safe then have them put a lien on you.

Assuming the debt qualifies for the statue of limitations,
after 7 years, it means they can not sue you for the debt, they can still try to get payment, you are not free of the debt.

Sophiesmama
the 7 years is how long a debt will stay on your credit report, but a company will try forever (it seems like it) to get the money back that you owe them. They may have sold the debt to a collector who now starts haunting you all over again.

donald e
yes, there is no staute of limitations of length of time and if its on your credit it could come back to haunt you if you try to finance real estate

Thin Kaboudit
Hey Jesus, if I had borrowed $10,000 from you EIGHT years ago, and you just now found out where I live, would that mean I didn't owe you the money any more?

Pay your debts. And don't make any new ones. They will follow you FOREVER....
