Yes, you can. You are required to continue to make payments on the account though until it's paid off.
In addition, closing the account with a balance is something you really shouldn't do unless you absolutely have to. I say that because when you close the account it doesn't count that credit line as available credit (for obvious reasons) but it still counts your balance towards your debt to credit levels. That can considerably lower your credit score if this was your main card or you have a high balance on it.
I would advising cutting up the card so you don't use it while you pay down your balance then closing the account when it's paid off. |

Yes you can cancel a card with a balance. Of course that does not let you out of paying the balance. If it did I would cancel ALL of mine.
The best way to cancel the card is to cut it up and mail it back to the company via registered mail with a letter stating that you want to cancel the card. This is the safest way because they can not say you did not cancel it because you have a signature proving they got it. Follow up with an email that you keep a copy of. |

I would say either cut up the card or lock it away. Don't cancel the card just yet. It will actually be better for you to have the account open and showing a good payment history. Continue paying on the card and make sure not to be late on it. Later, you can decide to use the card, negotiate a better rate, or cancel it altogether. |

Yes, but don't do it. Pay it off first. If you close the account you will lose any leverage with the company. You may wind up with default interest rates and all sorts of other problems.
Closing the card also lowers your available credit limit. This makes balances you are carrying a higher percentage of debt and can cause your score to drop.
Wait till all your credit card balances are paid in full. Then keep open the two oldest major credit cards without annual fees. Close the rest via letter. Request written verification that the account is closed and 0 balance. You don't have to send it certified or registered. But you do want to keep that verification with your important financial papers. |

Many will not allow it to be closed until the balance is at zero. that is because when it is still open they can hold you to their terms. They can also continue to report your activity to the different agencies. I don't believe they can report after closure but not sure about that part. So, you are at their mercy as to whether they would allow you to close it before a zero balance.. they may or may not. Call and try.
Also, keep in mind closing it could bring your credit score down if you have it near max and have little to no other credit available. |
