At 14, it is not going to be easy to get a checking account with a debit card or a credit card. I would rule out the credit card 100%, especially if you want to make wise decisions. Now, to get that checking and debit card for you. All you need to do is find a financial institution that will allow you to have a checking account with your mom or dad on it with you. You WILL NOT be able to get this without a parent for legal reasons. Mainly, if you screw up and owe them lots of money - they can't come after you. You need an adult on the account that will take responsibility for you.
Now, I am not sure what sort of parents you may have; but if they are ones you don't think will go for this 100%, my suggestion is this. Present to them a budget for yourself, stating how much of your income you are going to save and how much you are going to spend. Of the spending, allow yourself a certain dollar amount each week of what you will be spending. For example: $50 of each check you want to buy new clothes; $30 each check you want to spend on electronics -- etc. If you can get it together to figure all that out, they may feel you are ready to handle a checking account.
This is how a debit card works: Just make sure you keep track of your account balance at all times. If you use your debit card, write it down in your check register. When you make a deposit, write it down. If you don't have money in your checking account, your card will be declined and you will look like a dumb a** infront of your friends. NOT COOL!!!
Just be sure to do the savings part too, and put money in there every time you get paid! Never ever borrow from it. Even if you want something cool, just wait till pay day! |

At your age, I would get a debit card. For this you need a checking account and that's all. Your parents can co-sign on it. When you use a debit card, the money has to be in your account at that time. It's a good thing to have BEFORE you have a credit card later. It teaches you how to keep track of your money and how to not spend more than you have. |

Best thing to do talk to your parents about opening a checking account, if you explain all this to them they should understand. You also, I believe, need your parents to open your account and they should also be able to get you a debit card and you can use that to get money out of your checking account...but my mom had to open my account and also sign the form they gave me for a debit card.
If you need to open it up yourself, then I suggest you do a lot of research about banks and interest, blah, blah and then go and talk to them about opening an account. But without a parent they probably won't, in matters of finance you generally need someone backing you up because young people are often risks |

However, your parents may get you a credit card under their account since they can pay for it.
How do credit cards work? Well, its kind of like having lots of cash in your wallet. You make a purchase, and the amount of credit in your credit card decreases. A monthly billing statement will come and you are required to pay the minimum payment. If you do not pay, your credit score will go down hill and will effect you when you want to take out a loan on a home or a car. Any remaining balance due on your credit card will have interest payments. So, if you want to avoid interest, you will want to pay off the balance on your credit cards.
How do debit cards work? You must have a savings or checking account at the bank. When you make purchases with debit card, money will be deducted from your bank account. Monthly banking fees may apply. |

You can get a debit card with your bank account, but remember this comes directly from your account so when the money is gone it is gone... It is not like a credit card, where you buy now pay later...
A credit card is like having the bank loan you money. They will let you buy but will charge you more money to do this for you... A $50 pair of shoes will cost you $65 in the long run if you buy it on credit.
You are not supposed to get a credit card until you are 18, but I bet if you had a job and sent in the application they would probably give it to you. If they do make sure that you pay it on time to keep your good standing, but if you don't, be aware that since you are under 18 it is not a legal and bidding contract. |

No reason not to. My 10 year old niece has a savings account with a debit card. Recommend that you go to a bank that you are familiar with one that a relative uses. Let them know what you want to do. Some may require an adult to sign with you depends on the bank. |
