Well the credit background can show you're spending habits. The lenders want to know if you're a risk for them or not. So if you have not credit history, it's awfully tough for a lender to make a choice to give you hundreds of thousands of their money.
Even if you were able to get approved, you may get a higher interest rate because to them, you're at high risk.
Same goes with financing a car, private student loans, credit cards, some utilities, etc.
EDIT:
It is possible to have good credit. If you pay bills on time and have no negatives on your report, you're still fine. But a credit card is the easiest way to build credit (and likewise, destroy credit). |

You don't necessarily need a "card" but you definitely need credit and you need collateral. One of the easiest ways to obtain credit is via a credit card. |

You don't need a credit card you need credit.
Most lenders will want you to have at least 3 active accounts with a 24 month history on them and at least one account with a high limit of $2400.
If you don't have credit, start working on it now.
Get a secured credit card if you can't get anything else. Charge something every month and pay it off every month. After 12 or 24 months you be able to get another credit card. If you get another one before 24 month get the first one for 30 months, this way there will ba a 24 month history.
You should also purchase a car. Get a loan for $2400 dollars and make the loan for 24 months.
By following this plane somewhere between 24 and 30 months from now you will have great looking credit and most lender would like to make you a home loan.
Keep in mind if you use a secure credit card or purchase a used car from someone who does their own financing ensure that they will report to the credit reporting agencies. |

what do you have for established credit right now?
a lender looks for "open trade lines" and the time they've been active, you may be already ready to get pre-qualified
and not even know it!
would you like a FREE NO COST NO OBLIGATION QUOTE? i am a mortgage broker, and i specifically deal in new/bad credit
loans. I can get your info and see how much "house" you can buy. then when you are ready, you'll have your letter, it makes the process go by much quicker
call me 1-866-242-6689 ext.5002 for a free quote, at the very least, you'll know your credit score and where you'll stand in this process. |

Not in all areas. Some lenders see a credit card as a debt and can hold that against someone getting a loan.
Others see it as a good thing if the payments are made on time. |

no. you just need money for a down payment and good credit. a credit card has nothing to do with it. |

You do need to have a good credit score. One of the way they determine your score is by how well you handle your credit cards - if you pay the bills on time, etc. |
