Can someone tell me how to improve my credit score?

Pay your credit card bills completely every month. DO NOT CLOSE/CANCEL YOUR CARDS. This lowers you score. You need to have credit in order to get a good credit rating. Your score will go up when you use your cards and keep them paid off. If you have a car loan, or home loan, or even pay rent, NEVER miss or even be late on a payment. That will help your score and badly hurt it if you are late or miss one. Stay out of debt. Never put more on a credit card then you can pay at the end of a month. The second way this helps you is depending on what card your using, you'll earn points or money back based on your using the card. If you pay your full bill each month you end up 'making' money.

Pay all your debts on time and in the full amount requested. Don't overextend yourself with credit cards, use only one.

Check your credit report for old collections. Start by paying those off and get it in writing that they have been paid off. This way you can fax the credit bureaus that they have been paid. For any charge offs or late payments that appear, simply wait until they drop off. ( it's a long road, it won't be overnight)
Buying a house and making payments on time will dramatically improve your score over time. But it is really important to make all your payments on time!
You don't need a good credit score to buy a house, or even credit at all. Just look for companies that do "manual underwriting".
It will take a couple years, but if you get your debt-to-income ratio down and make your payments on time, your score will gradually go up.

DON'T CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNTS AFTER YOU PAY THEM OFF! Length of credit history is huge to the credit bureaus. Don't pay just the minimum on credit cards, even a few dollars extra every month helps. Definitely pay your bills on time.
Depending on what is affecting your credit rating there are different steps that you should be taking.
If you have any questions or if I can help in any way don't hesitate to contact me.

pay off and close unnecessary accounts, don't accept new applications for credit or inquiries.

Both previous answers are good as far as they go. If you have a crdit card and some self control there are a couple of ways to help improve your score. First, make a series of small purchases over a few months and pay off the balance completely when the bill comes in and make sure to mail it so it gets to the company before payment is due. Then, make a somewhat larger purchase, something that cost (not knowing your income nor financial situation) say $100 or a figure that you can pay off over a 3 month period. By doing those 2 things you demonstrate that 1) you have self control and can pay off small amounts on a regular basis in a timely fashion. The larger purchase demonstrates your ability to pay over a period of time. When I was first starting out in life I got a store credit card and would buy something like supplies to change the oil in my car costing maybe $20.00 and paid the bill off as soon as it came in. The next month I might take someone to dinner and pay with a credit card and same thing, pay the balance in full when the statement came in and then after doing that for 3-5 months I made a larger purchase. I believe it was some stereo equipment that I paid about $150.00 for and paid it off in 3-4 months time to show my ability to make monthly payments. Now many years later I have great credit, a house that is paid for and I am paying off my car loan (I have only had it for 3 months) next month when a Certificate of Deposit matures. Good luck. Remember, just because a company offers you a credit card... you do not have to take it.

Pay your credit cards on time and pay ave the minimum.

Get a secured loan at yur bank for about $250-$1,000 - depends on how much extra you have to do this.

Don't use the money. Pay back the bank within 29 days of getting the loan. Go to another bank and open a savings account with $250-$1,000. Come back a week later and ask for a secured loan. Don't spend the money. Just pay back the loan within 29 days.

Do this 3x at 3 different banks. Always pay back the loan within 30 days - so you don't have to pay interest on the loan.

This will increase your credit score substantially!
