Can unpaid hospital bills ruin your credit?
I have no insurance and recently broke my leg, I am not working and the bills are piling up, the hospital bills are over$ 10.000, and I won't be able to pay that for awhile, and now they are taking me to the bill collectors, saying that if I don't pay they will ruin my credit!
I have good credit, and of course don't want to ruin my credit!

Sure, that is what happens when you do not pay your bills.

You made the choice not to pay for health insurance, and apparently it did not work well for you.

Your problem is you want your to light both sides of the candle. You don't want to pay your med bills right away, but you want your credit left intact. Unfortunately it is not going to happen.

The fact is that a huge number of people end up with ruined credit due to medical bills. It only takes one emergency to destroy a family's income.

It's no surprise that you got the preachers here telling you to pay your debts.....they seem to have missed the part where you are not working.

Unless you can work out a payment plan with the hospital, they will send this to collections, and it will go on your credit report. If this is the only bad mark you have, I don't see a huge impact. There will be a hit for a couple years but it will gradually improve. The problem is when you start getting multiple negative items on your report. That is when you push the "nuclear" button and declare bankruptcy.

So for now, negotiate with the hospital. If they won't work with you then the collection agents might. If not....they sue you. In that case (if you live in a state that allows it), the judge will order payment plans that you can probably afford. But the judgment will hurt your credit worse.

Like I said, you can't have it both ways.

Yes, an unpaid bill is an unpaid bill. Set up a payment plan with them to get that debt paid off.

yes it will
you should make agreetments with the hospital before it goes to collection once it goes there even if you pay it will stay there for 7-10 years

yes, medical bills are the worst bills, because, they oversharged you so much, have you ever saw how much insurance paid to the doctors? sample: doctorc billed 1000 dollars, insurace paid 250. You see, that doctor will not fight insurance company, but it will ruin your credit if you have to pay in the same situation cash. Doctor will not settle on 250 from you , but will settle with insurance. Sometimes doctor wants rest 750 from you.

Yes, those bills can ruin your credit, but as from my experience MOrtgage companies, don't look at the medical bills as big issue, just will not get good interest rate, if you bying home.

i hate medical bills, and there is almost nothing we can do about it, sometime i think doctors, just taking those number from the ***.

best way is to talk to the doctor about financial part before, but unfortunately we are so busy with our heath issues, that we only start care about financial part after getting bills from them.

Yes, if they go to collection. Have you tried to set up a payment plan with the hospital?

YES !! Hospital have become less hospitable (i know that was bad) when it comes to payment. Some will still send you to collections even if you send them partial payment. They are also very demanding and try to get you to stick to their payment plan, even if it doesn't work for you. My advice would be, don't ignore them, play their game and keep track of all contact you have with them so you can later prove you tried to work with them.

When the hell is this country going to wake up and fix our healthcare problem. The richest country in the world and we still can't provide a simple basic thing such as healthcare for all of its citizens.

EDIT- Landlord your a tool (that's a bad thing) and what is wrong with this country and its citizens. How do you know this ladies situation. Maybe she couldn't afford the insurance. Its quite expensive. Maybe if you came down off you pompous high horse and stopped looking down your nose at others... you'd see the reality of the situation, and the reality the rest of the country lives in.

Unfortunately yes it does. I had always been told that they wouldn't affect when purchasing something or whatnot but then I was dealt with a huge blow. It matters a lot! Are you in a position that you could check into the hospital's charity plan? Sometimes they will cover a bill for you if you are in a bad spot financially, like low income. But if other bills are piling up too, you gotta figure something out quick. And for the person below that said you "chose" not to pay for health insurance, most of us do not choose not to; it is so expensive that we cannot. Many of us are in the position that you are in and it sucks. I went through a divorce and then about a year later I hurt my knee and was off for a couple of months. The bills piled and went unpaid and now my credit is down the toilet. It will get worked out eventually, but I just can't worry about it. I am getting by. Anyway, try to get a loan, or check with the hospital about charity or insurance, or maybe a family member can help. Otherwise you will just have to make up for it when you are well. That's life. Sorry.

i hate to say but hospitals are greedy ...they will do whatever it takes to give everyone the message that if you dont pay bills you will pay for it in the long run. Some people suggested making a payment plan. You can like my brother did call the collection agency and pay what you can up front and then maybe pay 150 dollars a month . My hospital in new jersey is mandated by law to provide those who cant pay with charity care. charity care is a program where medical care is given as a discount. so this may be different in your state. Also you dont want to have this bill in the back of your mind haunting you and also have it file on your credit for up to seven years. But im on your side because 10000 is an arm and a leg. no joke intended. Also how was the leg injured .in a car accident ??.if someone was responsible then they should pay for it.

I would not worry about it, medical bills are not looked at as seriously as other defaults. It may lower your actual credit score but a lending agent is usually not looking at unpaid medical bills when considering a credit application.
