No, there are a lot of people in your same situation, with 10 times your debt. It is the creditors fault for over extending you. They will eventually sell off your debt to a bill collector for pennies on the dollar, and then these people will harass you for a couple years. Eventually the phone calls will stop and after seven years of no contact with collectors, the debts will be removed from your credit. You are still young in the process so it might be smart to contact the creditors and set up payment plans yourself, to avoid any more damage to your credit. If your credit score doesn't bother you and you don't need a loan in the next six years, run like Bambi! This is a civil matter and they could take you to claims court, and garnish your wages, that is the most extreme, but then it would take them a lifetime to get back the money. You have not committed a criminal act, therefor you will not go to jail. If you do run, don't answer the calls from creditors, b/c everytime you have contact with them the clock resets back to 7 years. |

No, you can't go to jail unless you racked up the debt on someone else's card or committed fraud. If the debt is yours, you can't be put in jail for that alone |

No. This is a civil manner (breach of contract) not a criminal matter. |

No they cannot - but like the first answerer states, they can take you to court, garnish your wages, etc to get their money. If I were you, I'd arrange payments to settle the account before things get to that point & really out of control. You'll regret it dearly in the future. |

They will threaten to call the debt collectors or take you to court and get you to pay up somehow. Don't let it get that far though-try and arrange a payment schedule with the the credit card company and tell them how much you can afford to pay. Get the ball rolling-don't let it build up anymore ok. |

No you can't it is considered a civil matter not a criminal one. They can sue you and place a judgment on you so you will have to pay them eventually or they could garnish your wages. That's about the worst of it which is pretty bad but you can't go to jail. |

No but they will hassel you forever. |

No. But they can take you to court and have other ways of getting the money out of you. |

No. They will make all kinds of claims of what they are going to do to you, don't beleive any of it. There is not one single thing they can do other than call you constantly. There are laws they have to follow on when they can call and how often. Keep a log of when they call (time) & how often. If they do not follow the laws then you can easily sue them & they will have to pay you, the first offense is around $1,500. When they call tell them your messages are being recorded, you have to tell them by law & they must do the same. |

they could but usually they will just reposess the things you haven't made payments on (e.g you could get your car, tv, table, bed, radio taken away or you could have your electricity shut off until you make a payment) |
