Unpaid credit cards is a civil matter, NOT a criminal matter. You will not go to jail unless they can somehow prove fraud (next to impossible).
They can file a lawsuit and get a judgment, but since you nave no job or property they will not be able to collect anything. If the debt is large enough they may just do it and sit back, waiting for you to get back on your feet. Then when you finally get a job...WAMMO! A garnishment.
And judgments look terrible on your credit, so you really want to do your best to avoid them.
If they do start hitting you with judgments, file for bankruptcy. A bankruptcy looks terrible, but it is about the same as having 2-3 judgments on your record. |

Just to add to beelnite's comment. He stated, “And each time you try to make good on your debt - the clock resets." He's speaking of statue of limitations and he is correct to some degree. Just to clarify. Statue of limitations ONLY resets when the account is within statue and a payment is made. If the account is out of statue and you make a payment it will not reset the statue. All states are different when it comes to "SOL" in CA the "SOL" is 4 years written contract. Just an FYI. |

It would take years but ultimately when the court orders you to pay and you don't you could be held in contempt. |

You know what if you call the credit card companies and tell them that you need to suspend your cards for a while they will do that and you can start looking for work and hopefully get these cards paid with the help of a debt consolidation company. The make you pay one low payment and reduce your interest charges. |

No, you will not be arrested, however you can be sued. That is something that strictly depends on the creditor, and the amount of debt you owe. If it is a large sum of credit card debt it may be better for you to file bankruptcy, wipe the debt clear, and start over. Good Luck |

No they do not have debtors jail anymore. Just keep searching for a job and you might want to call the creditors and let them know. |

No, but if you can't file for bankruptcy and you can't pay you'll be harrassed for the next 7 years until your record clears. Your credit card companies will sell your debt to collectors who will make every effort to make you pay something. After awhile they'll sell your debt to someone else and you will be hounded like a dog. You will feel like a non-person - a disenfrachised scallawag for a looooong time.
That's kinda like prison. And each time you try to make good on your debt - the clock resets. Let's say it's been 6 years and 9 mos and you pick up the phone. If you promise to pay something you now have that mark on your record another 7 years.
SO you need to decide right now what you are going to do. Repair your credit - or skip out and face about 7 years running away, hiding and worried every time your phone rings and then 3 years trying to rebuild yourself financially.
Even after 7 years some companies can get ahold of your past. You are never completely free no matter what.
It's a horrible way to get out of the gates if you are a young person. |

I don't think so, but they won't leave you alone, your credit will be ruined, and even your reputation as trustworthy when you apply for a job. So, get a job, and maybe get in contact with some company that helps you manage your debt until you pay it off. |

I don't know about jail, but you're headed up the creek. Hope you have a paddle. |
