They can check your credit report because with a name and SSN you have a credit profile even if there's nothing in it. Your best bet to starting credit is to get a store credit card and make small purchases and pay off the card every month. Many stores will give you a credit card with on a drivers license. I got my first credit card from Sears. It takes a little while, but you can get a good credit profile going. After that GUARD IT WITH YOUR LIFE. As you already know, you can't get anywhere these days without credit. Imagine what would happen with bad credit. |

The easiest way to build credit when you are young is to apply for a credit card as a student. Just pick one of the better solicitations that you receive. Just be careful. No credit is always better than bad credit!
I wrote this guide (link below) in January which has a good section on how credit works. Just skip to the 11th page (page A) and go from there--very easy to understand. |

You have to start slowly... if you're working and have verifiable income, try getting a Sears credit card, then try Capital One. Start slowly, pay your bills on time and don't use all of the credit available to you. If you have a $500 credit limit, don't run it up to $499...

If you've never had a credit card or paid any utility bills then you have a blank credit report so when your credit is checked there's no "history" for them to assess whether or not you can pay back the loan. You need to apply for a credit card with a reputable bank, they'll probably give you a minimum line of credit, i.e. under $1000. If you're responsible with money you can make purchases on the credit card but pay the monthly bill timely otherwise your credit report will reflect a negative entry which lowers your FICO score. A good FICO score is above 600. Credit cards are a great way to find yourself in debt. |
