Can you increase your limit to spend in a credit card if you pay money to it?
My credit limit is £2000 but I need to do a single payment of £4050. Is it possible to pay £2050 to my credit card to increase the money available to spend up to £4050? My current balance is £0 of course as I do not owe anything. Have you ever done that before? Any problems doing so? Thanks a lot guys!

Yes you can no problem.

Well, in my experience it's a bad idea - but I can only give the HSBC as an example. We were going to Australia and I wasn't sure if my HSBC card would work in the autotellers, so, on the advice of a friend, we "charged up" our credit card by putting £2000 in so that we could withdraw cash on the credit card rather than our current account. I then tried to buy something while we were there and the transaction was declined. After being on hold (from Australia to the UK on a mobile!) for ages, I eventually got someone who said that in the small print of the contract, it says you are not permitted to go into credit on your card (they earn no interest this way, so they don't like it!) and if you do, they reserve the right to cancel your card until you take the money back out. Then, they said it would take 5-7 working days for the money to be refunded to my account, and I would not be able to use my card for this period. Obviously, this was very inconvenient! If you plan on taking this course of action, check first with your credit card company - they may allow it with permission possibly - but I wouldn't just pay it in or you might find you can't pay any of it!

Most will only allow you to pay a very small amount over your balance.

Pay the item with your credit card and top-up the rest with cash.

Your limit will still be 2000. Why don't you just pay 2050 on cash then the rest on your card.

kritster74
My credit card company once agreed to this, although they did mention that it wasn't like a bank account and shouldnt be in credit. No doubt due to the fact if its massively in credit, they wont be able to apply any charges to you

This is normally possible but this depends from one bank to the other. If you have access to your credit card details online, try putting in some say 1 pound and check if your status goes +1. This normally means the bank is okay with you having a possitive credit over the limit. Then you can put 2050 and check when it gets processed and then swipe it immediately (dont give a big gap). This goes fine normally. Some banks however bounce your transcation back (if its within the same institution) which you will realise when you put 1 pound in.

of course, if you havn`t spent any of you £2000, then pay a further £2050, your ballance will increase to £4050, but bear in mind your limit will still be £2000 when the £4050 is spent, so you will be at your limit

You need to ask your card issuer if they will do it.

There are several potential problems;

1) they won't do it at all and suspend your card until you correct it.

2) If you pay in that much there's a good chance it will set off some anti-money-laundering alarms on your account, and they will suspend it until they find out why.

If you let them know before hand, and they are prepared to do it, they will put notes on your account and it should be okay. But put the money on well in advance so that any automated detection is triggered and you can sort it out before you need to make the payment.

You can also get pre-paid credit cards; try the Alliance&Leicester. With these you top the money up before hand, you can't go 'overdrawn'. But it still carries the fraud protection that a maestro card doesn't.

Some of the US-style credit cards - Amex and Diners - don't have credit limits on your account. They expect you'll make large payments with it (e.g. business class plane tickets), but you must pay promptly, and they are gradually phasing credit limits in.

YES YOU CAN DO THAT

Credit card is a convenient and cashless way to carry money. A single piece of plastic removes all hassles and provides great freebies for spending your own money. It's always great to have a good credit limit. The credit limit in simple terms, is the maximum amount you can spend using your credit card. If a small credit limit is the cause of your concern, don't worry anymore. Just follow these steps and get your credit limit increased.

The credit card issuers don't like to take risks with people who do not follow the terms and conditions properly. The first step towards increasing your credit limit should be to follow the credit card terms and conditions and stay within limits.

Credit card issuing companies do pay great attention to your credit history. If you have a good credit history chances are fair that you will have a good credit limit. If not, try to improve upon your credit history. Make your car loan, mortgage, personal loan or student loans repayment on time. This will give the necessary boost to your credit history and increase your credit limits.

Older credit cards are also a good instrument to increase credit history. The longer you stay with a credit card the better it will reflect on your credit history. It is not a good idea to close old and longstanding credit cards, one should repay all balances on them and keep them in good standing. This will get you the faith of credit card issuing companies, and help increase the credit limits. You could opt to get a travel moneycard from somewehere like the post office. These are basically Visa debit cards that can be used anywhere Visa is accepted (I imagine they're are other types). They cost a one off fee of £10 and as far as I know there is no limit to how much you can charge them up to. You pick the currency (Sterling, Dollar or Euro)
