Can you live without Credit Cards?
My mother was planning a cruise with an old friend and had to pay in advance. She was going to pay with check but was told they required a credit card. She didn't own a credit card so went to her bank and they issued her one. They refused to accept a check. Also, car rental place only want credit cards for payment. What is another way to pay if you don't have credit cards?

I dont have one, and i get b, debit cards work fine. And you ask if its possible to live with out credit cards. Yes, you can live without one. You can live without a lot. People choose to go on cruises, and get car rentals, they are not usually a necessity.

A customer can also use a debit cards that draw directly on their checking account.

Rana
yes, still I don't have any such card in use.

JustAsk'n
well we don't have on. Yes we can not rent a car or anything but we don't need too. And when we do need something like that we just give the money to mom and she puts it on her card.

I have often paid cash for a rental car, both in the us and in europe. You do need quit a lot of cash though as you have to pay 500 dollar upfront and 500 euro in Europe. Obviously they will not accept checks as these are not guaranteed.

So I live heapily without credit cards.

Well it is good to have at least one (1) credit card - but then again most banks have a check card with a visa logo that is accepted in lieu of an actual credit card

Credit cards are used to commit you to an item ie, renting a car (you have to have a certain amount available to rent the car) renting a shampoo machine same thing they will make sure that you can pay for the rental and the machine should you not return it

Sometimes people consider them another form of identification as Bank of America has photos of you on your credit card.

Unless you plan to save up for everything you want to purchase, you will need some form of credit expecially for unsceen expences - flat tire, burglary, hospital, dental (things that insurance does not cover) pet expenses (yes there is a credit card for that too)

Checks are accepted at most grocers and or walmart etc. Most of these stores now give your check back and run it electronically - if the money isn't there they will let you know then - also people can put a stop payment on the check after the time of service or purchase for a fee at their bank and the retailer is out of the money and now has to file to get it back through a collection agency so checks on large purchases are usually not welcome - now she could have went to the bank and purchased a cashiers check - like a money order in the exact amount of the cruise and I am sure they would have taken that b/c it is just like cash.

Sorry. In some cases, you need a credit card as proof of credit worthiness. That's where our world has gone.

In some cases, you might be able to use a debit card, but you would need to have a large amount of cash in the account for the vendor to place a hold on. And in the end, it's up to the vendor if they will accept this.

Debit card. it will do anything a credit card will do (car rental included) except get you into debt. It has all the protection of a credit card as long as it has a visa or mastercard logo on it. it says so right on their website.

Its the sub prime loan industry that's in trouble not people that use manual underwriting to get a loan.

stay away from credit cards. Remember, borrower is always slave to the lender.
Thats in the Bible.

Debt free is the way to be!

Everyone can live without credit cards, but they do make some things easier! Your credit worthiness is a good indicator of your financial stability. Good credit will make your score go up and this in turn makes it easier to get lower interest rate loans.

Your credit score is not an based solely on how much debt you have, so it's not an "I love debt" score! In fact, the more of your credit is eaten up by debt, your score goes down, not up!

You should consider establishing credit and learning how to manage it properly. Never Spend more than you can afford no matter how good your credit is and this is where most run into problems!

There will be those who will tell you that you can get a home loan with manual underwriting, but this practice has caused the current home loan mess because the manual underwriters got caught writing up "liar loans" and no one comes out a winner when this happens!

Go to my website! I went through an ID theft and bankruptcy and my score went up from 486 to 729 in a little over a year! I now have lines of credit available, including credit cards with 9.9% APR and lower and I have very little on them and most have a zero balance!

You need to establish credit. I own 2 Mercedes Benz, 2 Dodge Ram 4x4 trucks and a Cadillac, plus a nice sprawling ranch house and most of it is all paid for! Use Credit Wisely!!!!!!! Oh, I almost forgot the Holiday Rambler 5th Wheel travel trailer, it's paid for too.
