My sister had her Identity stolen from her when she was 13 years old. and now she is unable to get the funds she needs to go to college. She is now 23 almost 24 years old. She has put a flag on her credit and all that, but when she checked up on it they told her that there was absolutely nothing they could do. I was wondering if there is any chance that she can ditch the old social security number and get a brand new one and start over completely? |

No, she can not get a new social security number.
She should be able to dispute those items on her credit report as being ID theft. Including proof that she was only 13 at the time should help. If that doesn't get the item removed, she should send certified, return receipt letters to the creditors requesting validation to include copies of contracts or other documents that prove the debt is hers.
Derogatory items age off 7-1/2 years from date of first deficiency. Since the ID theft was over 10 years ago, most of it shouldn't show at all. |
