Yes you can (or they can). The first four numbers indicate what bank/company issued it and what type of card it is.
I don't know if there is a list of the codes used.
Some of the respondents do need to brush up on their ideas of what the difference is between a Debit and a Credit card ... I can see trouble down the line, lol. |

No, for Visa Debit/ Credit cards, they both start with a 4 and have the same number of digits in them. Your checking account number should not appear in any form in the debit card number. |

No...but a debit card wont let you hold credit. Most rental car companies try to hold credit and a debit card will deny that kind of transaction. |

yes it will have a debit logo for the most part on the card if it is a debit. and mastercards start with 5, visa with 4, amex 3 i think and discover is 6 and etc etc. yada yada. |

no. you can tell the brand of card - Mastercard, Visa, Amex - by the first digit though. 5 is MC, 4 is Visa, 3 is Amex, but that holds true on Credit and Debit cards. |
