Can you use a Debit Card as credit?
I went to buy a book with my mastercard debit card and the cashier asked me: credit or debit? I replied debit but made me wonder if you can reply credit instead and if anything negative would occur if you do?

You can use the credit line on your debit card just like a credit card with one exception. You can only charge an amount that is the same or less than the available balance in your checking account. Using the credit line on your debit is using the mastercard line and can be used in place of a regular credit card with most businesses. There are a few places that won't accept the credit line on your debit card. I've only encountered one place over the course of years that wouldn't use my credit line on my debit card in place of a regular credit card. When you use your credit line on your card, the funds will be removed from your checking account just like it would if you had used a check. As for negative reactions, you will only have one if you overdraw your account. On your bank statement, a credit deduction will list the business where you used your credit line where a check written will only relay the check number and amount spent. This means that at a glance you can identify where your money was spent. That's a positive effect of using your credit line. This allows you to purchase online, mail order, by phone and general businesses. It also allows you to purchase items that monthly payments can automatically be deducted from your account monthly until your purchase is paid for. Some banks actually give their patrons rewards for using their credit lines. To find out if yours does, simply call your bank. Your bank can also verify the information that I have given you.

sahel578
you can use it as credit with no consequences

Firecracker!
It's basically the same. All comes out of your account. One a little faster than the other I think. Ask your bank.

Yes. I use my debit card as a credit card all the time.

You can use your debit card as a credit card if it has the visa or mastercard logo on it. Nothing bad is going to happen to you or your credit

qman
Yes, I say credit all the time. The only difference is that if you say debit then you have to enter a pin number. If you say credit then you have to sign.

You can say your debit card is credit but it still works the same way. the money will come right out of your account. The cashiers ask that because sometimes they can't tell if the card is debit or credit.

legal aide
as long as there is the mastercard or visa symbol on your card, you can use it either way. One you put your pin number, the other you sign.

Yes you can usually...if you do they offer better protection against theft and fraud.

vmoore708
If it has a visa/mastercard logo on it then yes you can. Just sign for it instead of entering your PIN. The only thing I disagree with is the time table some ppl are refering to. I dont know about all banks but the credit union I use the money is out of my account before I even get home. It doesnt matter if I use credit or debit...when I get home and look online my acct has been deducted 99% of the time. The other 1% it says pending and the amount. So dont think it buys you more time to get money in the bank...you will get busted thinking that. Just an fyi

lakrluvr
Yes you can do both - the difference is that when you say "Debit" it comes out immediatley from your acct. When you say "credit" - it usualy will just authorize the funds first and will take a few days before it actually is taken from your acct.

yes sir, that's why they ask you, "Debit or Credit?"

Ananke402
First, is there a Visa/MasterCard logo on it? Second, what are your bank fees?

If a debit card as a logo, then it can be run as a credit. What this means is that it still comes out of your account, but you don't enter a PIN, you sign for the purchase. This is also helpful when purchasing online and it asks for a credit card. However, some banks charge a fee if used as a credit card vs. a debit and vice versa. And as some answerers stated, banks will often run promotions to get you to use it as a credit card (they are usually paid by Visa/Mastercard for this participation as it makes the credit card companies money- they charge a fee to the store you purchase from for processing their cards. They get more money from credit transactions rather than debit ones)

Most banks offer you points towards gifts and/or some sort of money back when you use your Debit Card as a credit card. The only time I use my debit card as a debit card is when I need cash back because my bank offer points and cash back

No. I think it takes a bit longer for everything to clear at the bank. It doesn't really make much of a difference.

I use mine as credit almost exclusively. Of course I do this because National City offers points rewards if I use it that way.

There isn't really a negative to it. In fact someplaces charge fees (or used to) if you use it as a debit.

wow, I feel bad for how stupid the general public is. If you select Debit it will take the exact amount directly out of your account and sometimes the bank will charge you a fee (sometimes not). If you use credit the transaction goes through a company like Visa who collects a small percentage of money for processing your transaction but allows you the freedom to use your card where you can't use debit like online. Where I work we ask because if the transaction is $25 or less they don't have to sign for it, so its faster if they just select credit and go on their way. But some people who play it close can't wait till their money comes out of the account because they might overdraw and they like to use debit because the money comes out faster. So there you have it. Either way it comes out of your bank account directly and no they don't sent you a bill with interest whoever said that doesn't know what they are talking about.

Since the majority now have a Visa or Mastercard logo you can do credit also. My bank gives a rebate for using credit instead of debit. There is nothing negative to using this option. I like it best because some places charge a fee if you use debit but not for credit.

By choosing "debit" or "credit" means that with credit you swipe (your card) and sign (the receipt) while debit requires you to enter your personal identification number, just like you would if you were going to use an ATM. Since physically debit and credit cards are pretty much the same, that's a main reason why you were asked that question.

No, nothing negative happens if you do.

gf does it all the time, iyt works but i cant tell u the benefits i use mine as debit only

D4Pres2012
it works both ways. sometimes banks who issue debit cards will send out a mailing and run a contest asking customers to use the card as a credit instead of debit when making purchases. I don't know what the advantage is for the bank- probably it takes longer for a credit purchase to post to your account and they're making interest on your money somehow. but for customers it works either way.

With a bank debit card you can purchase anything using debit or credit. The only difference is that your bank may charge a fee to your account when you use debit. and although there isn't a fee attached to using credit. Credit usually takes longer to show a charge on your account.

Ado
The only thing that happens when you run it as credit is that the processing of the transaction goes through the regular processing chanels that handle credit card transactions for the establishment, which generally takes 2-3 days to be reflected in your account. Using it as a debit causes the transaction to connect directly to your checking acocunt and withdraw the funds imediately. Beyond that you have to put your signature on the receipt when it is run as credit instead of using your pin number.

Bowling chick
You can use your debit card as a credit card. It will still come out of your bank account, but would take another day or two to clear the account, whereas a debit is pretty much next day. But you can't make payments on it like a regular credit card.

That has happened to me, also.
Nothing bad happens.
Even if you choose to pay by credit, you wouldn't be able to buy anything that's going to cost more than what you have in your account.
So, I still wonder why they ask, that's kind of dumb.

klbythebay@sbcglobal.net
It depends...........my experience was :After inquiring at Wells Farge prior to making a trip I was assured by the teller that it would be good. When I arrived at my destination I went to rent a car and found the debit card not valid for taking posession of the vehicle...I had to get my relative to pick me up at airport !! Next day I used HIS credit card to rent a car......incidentally when I returned the car at the end of my trip I PAID THE BILL WITH THE SAME DEBIT CARD !

Several times on-line I have had my VISA debit card refused for charges since the numbering system differs from straight credit cards.

I believe that the credit card industry keeps this so in order to make more money either from use charges, merchant charges, or both, as well as ! LATE CHARGES ! which is their cash cow.

ameeker
It only works in some places

Renaissance Man
You reply debit, and the cashier can enter it as a credit transaction, and you will sign the slip intead of putting in your PIN.
