walkinbyfaith7 | Cancel my credit card? |
I've had a BoA credit card for about 4 years now, I just got the balance to 0$. I'd like to cancel the card, but have heard both side of the story of it hurting my credit and not hurting my credit? I have 20,000$ credit line on that credit card, and I'd like to get rid of it so I'm not tempted to keep using it..I have a couple other credit cards with much, MUCH lower interest rates..that's the main reason I want to get rid of the credit card b/c of it's ridiculous APR.. should I just cancel this card??? |

I say that you go ahead and cancel it. If you still have it available you most likely WILL use it again at some point. If you are worried about having it for an emergency I say that you build up a cash reserve that equals or exceeds that amount. The fact that you have your own cash reserve for emergencies will 1) make you look at what a REAL emergency is harder as it is your own money you are using, and 2) you can earn interest on that money (i.e. putting it in a liquid Money Market Account).
I encourage all my friends to not borrow money. If you can purchase everything with your own money, it won't matter if your credit score goes down. The only reason one needs a high credit score (for the most part) is for borrowing money. If you don't borrow money, then the credit score is not as important. |

Don't cancel this card; it gives you a high "available credit" percentage, which is part of your credit score. You can cut it up, don't use it, but if you cancel it with the card issuer, your credit score will go down. |

First call them and see if they will lower your APR. Then don't cancel it just put it away and don't use it...you never know when you may NEED it. |

Cut up the card...
yes, closing the account may hurt your rating depending where your numbers are. |

If you're like me and have trouble controlling yourself with your cards you might wanna get rid of it. It sounds super hard to do..you should have at least one card for emergencies though I guess |

do not cancel it... just do not use it..... even if it has a high apr, if not used it means nothing...
the reason you keep it is a protion of your credit score is based on credit limit and amount of credit used the ratio dictates a portion of your score...example
$20,000 limit and 0 balance plus two cards with $5000 limits maxed out
your ratio is $30,000 limit with $10,000 balance or 33% which is good, at 5-10 % even better and ideal....
close the account and now you have a $10,000 limit and a $10,000 balance and 100 % used up.... which will drop your credit score......
so no!!!!!!!! no do not cancel it...just do not use it... I had Bof A and canceled them for even less trivial reasons and my score tanked....... i had a $15,000 limit with a zero balance.....score dropped from 750+ to 710 |

well if you have other credit cards, then just do a balance transfer, basically combine the one that you don't want to another one. but it's not a bad thing to have a credit card with $0 balance, it's good credit report, you are not having an outstanding balance and you are not late paying fees :) |

Don't cancel it, it will ruin your credit. It's better to have the card open.
Take the card, put it in a ziplock bag, fill it with water, and freeze it! Keep it in the back of the freezer.
If you ever really need it for an emergency, you'll have to wait hours for it to thaw out b/c you can't microwave it or anything or you'll ruin the card.
That will keep your spending in line! |

I would not do business with BofA ever!!! They are probably just as bad if not worse than Wells Fargo! Both suck!!! |

Cancel it. If u have it u may be tempted to use it again. Good luck!!! |

absolutely....it is also isn't a good idea to have too much available credit. |

Yes.
As long as you pay your credit cards on time you will always have a good credit card standing. |

canceling the card is a good idea if you're tempted to use it and it has a higher apr than your others. it does hurt your credit to have a card with a zero balance tho because it looks like you're a liability if you wanted to purchase something using your credit... so if you're not going to use it at all, it would be better to cancel than to leave it at zero. |

it wont hurt your credit because it shows a 0 balance..So just cancel it. |
