Cannot get credit card, need credit history?
I'm in college and have tried applying for credits cards over 50 times to build up a score and am always denied. I don't really want to use them a lot per se, I just need to build up a score! I've tried department stores (i.e. American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Macy's), Banks (even my Washington Mutual starter credit card denied me), and even gas stations due to insufficient credit history. How am I ever going to get a history if no one will give me a card! This has been going on for two years. Help!

Get some other things in your name.. example: cell phone, apartment, electric bill. Those items also build your credit. Make sure also if you have any medical bulls to pay them off...seeing as they also reflect on your credit score. I am in the same dilemma..So i have put my apartment, electric, and cell in my name. I am slowly building credit. Also make sure, when you are applying you have had your current job for 6 months. If you do not have a job for atleast 6 months, they won't even look at your application anymore. They used to give CC to ANYONE who wanted one.

Seek out a store card that is good for a sub prime merchandise outlet and apply. They will approve anyone. You will have to put down a deposit but you will be able to purchase goods on this card. The credit agencies will see this as they would any other card and see you have an open line of credit. Only use about 20% of the credit you are given.

Trying muliple times in a short period can hurt your credit score. Try applying for a prepaid credit card. Also, ask you parents or friends to add you to their account (without receiving a card). It hits your credit but you cant buy anything on their account.

don't apply for 50 credit cards in short period of time
that actucally hurts you non exisitant credit history

get a secured CC

but be careful on those
some have high fees or membership fees, typically 200 to 350, which is charged to the account and must be paid before the card even becomes activated
avoid those

a prepaid Visa or Master card DOES NOT do anything toward building credit history since there is no debt, and nothing is unsecured.

it typically takes a secured card 6 months to go to unsecured status and your deposit ( used to secure the card ) refunded

too many inquries at once makes credit card company very nervous
since you have been declined credit you can get a free copy of your credit report
I would check your credit report as well
another idea is to try a secured credit card (one you deposit money on)
sometimes those are reported to the credit card bureaus
(like if you deposit say 500 dollars into secured account and that
bank will issue a credit card with that 500 limit
and if you pay your bills on times and sometimes (usually year
some of those secured credit card become unsecured
credit cards

It helps alot to have a co-signer if you have no credit history. they will use both of your scores and you will both benefit from the payments. You can also try going to your bank and get a secured loan. they will freeze the amount of the loan in your account and then deposit the same amount back in it so your not looseing or gaining any money but it will build your credit.

Reena
Try J.C. Penny....
or try to ge a secured Card from your bank.
Make sure to get it from your bank and that this card actually does
report to the Credit Bureaus.
Best thing to do is to give your bank a deposit of $300 for this card
and then use it sparingly... but make sure to use it.
While it doesn't add much to your credit score it at least shows a history... and will eventually gain you enough "history" to be able to get a real credit card.

you have to start somewhere, so here;s what to do....
1. put some money in the bank, and build it up...
2. when you get to 500 dollars go into the bank and borrow $100
using the $500 on deposit as collateral.
* remember you can not take any of the $500 until the loan is paid.
3. pay off the loan in 8 mo. no more or no less...that is the period in which it takes to record your history of paying back a loan. pay extra but don't pay it off any sooner.
4. check your mail box, you will now receive a ton of junk mail asking you to apply for credit cards, and your hand will get tired of writing...
5. be sure to read all the literature and only take the credit that has 0% for 1 year or based on your credit score, one with a very very low rate....
6. always pay on time and never borrow needlessly.

try taking out a loan and putting the amount in an interest-bearing checking account. As you pay off the loan, the interest you earn in the checking account should pay for the interest on the loan, provided you plan it right. im also in college and had the same problem and this worked.
