CITE: 18USC894] TITLE 18--CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE PART I--CRIMES CHAPTER 42--EXTORTIONATE CREDIT TRANSACTIONS
Sec. 894. Collection of extensions of credit by extortionate means
(a) Whoever knowingly participates in any way, or conspires to do so, in the use of any extortionate means (1) to collect or attempt to collect any extension of credit, or (2) to punish any person for the nonrepayment thereof, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both. (b) In any prosecution under this section, for the purpose of showing an implicit threat as a means of collection, evidence may be introduced tending to show that one or more extensions of credit by the creditor were, to the knowledge of the person against whom the implicit threat was alleged to have been made, collected or attempted to be collected by extortionate means or that the nonrepayment thereof was punished by extortionate means. (c) In any prosecution under this section, if evidence has been introduced tending to show the existence, at the time the extension of credit in question was made, of the circumstances described in section 892(b)(1) or the circumstances described in section 892(b)(2), and direct evidence of the actual belief of the debtor as to the creditor's collection practices is not available, then for the purpose of showing that words or other means of communication, shown to have been employed as a means of collection, in fact carried an express or implicit threat, the court may in its discretion allow evidence to be introduced tending to show the reputation of the defendant in any community of which the person against whom the alleged threat was made was a member at the time of the collection or attempt at collection.

First of all, this is not a collection agency doing this. It is illegal in America for anyone to go to your house to collect on your debt or threaten physical harm. You may have to contact the police, admit what you did, & have them get the guys coming for you, if they do. Most online gambling places don't bother having anyone collect of the gambling debts they put out around the world. They just threaten & people pay to avoid violence. |

They lie. They will not come to your house. If they do, call the police and have them arrested for trespassing. Then they will be in jail, so they will not be able to call. Unfortunately, they will not come to your house, so you will not be able to have them arrested.
As for the telephone calls, either
a) Get caller ID and stop answering the calls from them
b) Change telephone numbers (and have the new number unlisted)
c) If this is a legitimate collection agency in the U.S., send them a letter telling them only to contact you in writing and not by telephone. If this is someone calling from another country, that probably will not work. |

I never heard of them ever coming to the house. I have several
debts my biggest is over $ 20.000. They've been after me for over seven years. Don't worry about it. |

a true collection agency is not allowed to harrass you in anyway or show up at your front door to threaten you. The only thing they are allowed to do is call and send you mail.
Change your phone number if its annoying and figure out how to pay them off so they will stop. |

Are they going to take your thumbs? Hah just kidding. If they are in a foreign country the only way they can legally collect the debt is if they have a local point of presence here in the US to collect the debt for them. Since it is only a thousand dollars, they will just keep harassing you with letters and phone calls. Call the collection agency and offer to settle for less than the amount owed. Most of the time they will just take it if it is a reasonable amount like maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of the amount. I should know. I avoided a bankruptcy by calling all these foolios and settling for less. |
