PatricksMom* | Collections call could it be a scam? |
Okay, I had a credit card a while ago. To put it simply i went way deliquent. I got ONE letter saying that it was going into collections. I'm aware of this. Now im trying to wait for my stimulus payment to pay it. Now, there is this company (i guess) that called me and they knew about my debt well i figured that they were the collections...Well they started talking really really fast and pretty much bottom line was give us your checking account information. Should i? I mean they know all about it. THey knew my husbands name. They are saying that my husband is going to be discharged from the navy!! But they are very pushy pushy on getting like a check number to take out of my account. They are telling me i only have like 3 days. I have NOT recieved a summons or anything. is this adding up to anyone else? Does anyone think this may be a scam. HOw could i go about seeing if this is true? Additional Details They also kept saying how if i paid it through them that i would be saving A GREAT ammount of money! |

Three days until what?
I would not give this information over the telephone. Tell them to snail mail you documentation and that you will snail mail them a check in return. |

Scam...there are many right now that are targeting the stimulus checks..
call the credit card company direct--DO NOT give them info
regarding your checking acct etc!! |

Tell them that you prefer to send you payment through the mail and that you will do so as soon as possible but you don't feel comfortable releasing that information over the phone, especially since they are the ones that called you and not vice versa. They should understand that. But pay it, or they will keep calling. |

Real collections agencies do ask for a direct connection to your checking account. Don't give it to them though, because they say they will "only" take out $150, but they end up taking your account down to a 0 balance. So if any checks bounce because of it you can't do anything to them because you owe the debt and you gave them electronic access to your account.
You can always send them a letter requesting proof of debt owed, and use the post office and talk with someone at the post office on what service requires a return notice letting them know they got it. Then if they don't present you with proof (your signature on an agreement) then I wouldn't pay it. It is their burden to show proof of debt owed. |

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING. There are plenty of phone call scams going around. Check out www.800notes.com and enter that phone number that called you. See if it is there and what people had to say. Most likely these people are scamming you to get personal information. Or they are some third party company that bought the debt from the credit card people. The condo my boyfriend and I are renting has an owner that owes some debt. Two companies kept calling and asking for him. At one point, one of the companies called my boyfriend's cell (we live in IL but his cell is CT). This proves that it is easy for them to get enough info to make them sound legit. |

Whenever a creditor/collector contacts you, you have the legal right to ask for "proof of debt" in writing.
Even if they are the legitimate collection company this will buy you some time.
Ask for proof of debt in writing and give them NO other info.
If they have your checking info, call your bank and ask what you can do to keep unauthorized charges from hitting your account.
Good luck and keep a log of the time of call, person calling and a return phone number. |

NO NO NO.......Do not give them your bank information. If you genuinely want to pay for it then ask them to contact you through the mail, not by phone. NEVER give your information over the phone. Collection companies love to make idle threats...do not let then intimidate you. They got your husbands information from your credit report. He will not be discharged from the navy. I think I would report this to the federal trade commission. |

Don't talk to them. Make them send you things in writing. Check out the Fair Debt Collections Act on the web and read it. Contact the original lender and work it out with them. |

you can call the credit card company and ask them if they have put you in collections and if so what is the name of the company. They can be VERY pushy but it is against the law for them to threaten you. You can let the credit card company know that you are waiting for your stimulas check but they do have the power to garnish wages and other things. We went through this One time when my husbands work was very slow. They told me I could pay some of it over the phone and I did with no problem afterward. That was several years ago.
Hope this help But deffinately call the credit card company to see if you ARE in collections FIRST before paying anything to someone who is calling |

It's not a scam, but if you give them your bank account number, the collector will empty the account.
Let's say you owe $1000. You tell the collector that you can only pay $300 because you need the rest of the money in your account to pay your rent. He says, sure, he'll take a partial payment, but needs to do it electronically. You tell him you are authorizing $300. He takes the account balance up to the $1000 owed. Now you can't pay your rent, your checks bounce and you rack of fees all over the place.
Your collector is a bottom feeder. He's saying that he can get your husband kicked out of the military. He can't do that. He might be able to file a judgement and garnish his pay, but that's not what he's threatening. |

Dont do it.. ask for a letter to be sent with this info on it
the name of their company
the name of the person your talking to
the reason they are collecting (the name of the credit card you used or whatever)
an address (physical)
a phone number
once you've dont that contact a lawyer and use the lawyer.. the info I have listed above maybe either more or less than what you need but it will help if something goes wrong. |

it's false you at the very least would have had to received a registered letter or something you signed for, they need proof that you were aware of the debt before they start legal action which in your case would involve small claims court and that requires you to be served give them no info tell them to call your legal rep. if they ask for a number politely but sternly tell them that if they can find you and figure out hubbies name they can find it themselves, and hang up. just a clever ploy by a collection agent, they get bonuses for prompt payments you know. |

This sounds like a scam that has been happening a lot lately. They find out somebody who is in debt, and maybe offer them a deal and do their best to sound official, but they just empty your accounts and you are still in debt. Only deal with who you KNOW you have a debt with, and don't give them any information, send them a money order or something, they should not have ot know anything about your accounts. |

Just continue with your plan. When you're ready to pay, contact the card holder directly, they'll connect you with their collections company if that's where it's at. Don't ever give information over the phone like that. Better safe than sorry. There's nothing they can do to you, I'm in the military, they're not going to kick your husband out over that. It's scare tactics, that's how they get your information. |

I think they are just regular old bill collectors. They ALWAYS want a check and your account info - they get paid for the money that they are able to collect.
I'd tell them you can do a payment plan or something... or don't answer unknown callers until you get your check. lol |

Yup, call the credit card company and ask them where they sent your account! |
