My sisters BF bought her an engagaement ring in October. He doesnt own a credit card so he has no credit history, good or bad. He opened an account with the jeweler and I ended up cosigning with him. However, the past few months he hasn't made any payments (they have since called off the wedding, so I'm sure that has soemthing to do with it...that and he's a complete lowlife...). Its getting to the point where I may seriously have to drop out of school, use my entire savings to just pay the thing off, and stay at my crummy job full tiem to make my own student loan payments. This is going to destroy my credit and ruin any plans I have. Do I have any options here to save my credit? I mean, it was my sister's wedding ring and nobody was anticipating a break up, what was I supposed to say? He had $2000 to use but made one huge payment the first month and "thought they would break it up and pay him several months ahead".

I can't believe I had such a stupid lapse in judgement. I mean, if he already had crummy credit, I never would've done it.
I think I'm gonna ahave to swing by his job (which his parents own...but that's a whole different story) and get to regulating lol). I do think it might be a good idea to ask for the ring back (she gave it back to him, guh) and see if I can hock it for part of the money.
Screw me once, shame on me...there won't be screw me twice :) Thanks for the advice so far! |

First of all although you heart was in the right place, this is a good lesson learned. I think under the circumstances that your sister should pay it off because I don't think this boy will help at all. Other ideas would be to contact his family for help with payment but that most likely won't help, or ask your parents for help in the meantime so you keep your credit rating in tact then work out for your sister to pay them off as she can afford it. I am sorry to say that if your sister or anyone else can help you out then you are liable for the debt. I would definately go see the jewellers and ask to see the manager and explain you situation, I am sure he will work out some sort of payment option so you don't loose your credit rating. Don't ignore it, go see them asap. Most importantly don't do this sort of thing again, people will take advantage of your kind heart and you will bear the cost. |

You have just learned a very expensive lesson. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER co-sign for anything! People who need co-signers usually need them cause they don't handle their finances very well.
Hopefully, your sister still has the ring. The best thing you can do is get the ring and sell it to pay off the debt. You will have to pay any outstanding balance and can then sue the boyfriend for that balance.
If the boyfriend has the ring and won't give it to you, you will have to pay the bill and sue him for he whole amount. |

Can you both try to return the ring to the store? Explain the situation to them and see if that's an option.
If the BF has anything to say about it, bend his ear and let him know that it's your credit he's ruining, not his. |

Do I ever understand! I co-signed for a car for someone who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina's flood waters! I'm told "go to small claims court" and this is over $12,000.00 plus. So, my first suggestion is look into that! If they're no longer together, talk w/ her about returning it to the store; tell her YOU are the one making the payments, and it's getting a bit hard on you. Let her read your explanation on here, writing is easier than speaking (for most).
I feel for ya! Make a copy of your question to bring to a lawyer or judge. In this little bitty rinky dink place I live, the mayor handles small claims court.
