tim_house2003 | Cosigning for a loan? |
ok, my wife went to apply for a personal loan of only $1000 dollars. Was told she needed a cosigner because she has no credit. my mother cosigned for her, and she has awesome credit. Between the two of them, about 80k yearly income. 30 from my wife and 50k from my mom. She was denied because the cosigner ad her do not reside in the same household. Has anyone ever heard of this? Any explaination? Additional Details We dont need the money but with her having NO credit she was just wanting a personal loan. BTW this is with Navy Federal Credit Union. |

Sure it is standard for some lenders. Loans made to co-apps not in the same household have a high rate of default and disputes. For lots of obvious reasons.
Make her show you the decline letter you will get a week. It will have the actual decline reasons. Sometimes the contact person making a statement regarding a decline reason is just guessing. They could have a policy of decisioning both applicants by having minimum credit score requirements.
Have your wife pull her credit report from FTC.gov. Take a look at it, I bet there is some negative info there.
I assume your credit is bad? If so then you have to ask why you are borrowing more money.
Not preaching, just a suggestion.
Usually someone with no credit is going to have to get a retail store card first, not a personal loan, which is just cash.
Build that up for a year and then get a credit card.
Your wife needs to open her own checking account and keep a few hundred in there. Don't need to use it a lot, but that can have some positive impact on her credit.

If your wife is trying to build credit and has $2500.00 in a savings accout, just let her convert it into a secured loan for 24 months and pay it back in 12. |

I suggest that you talk to the Supervisor of
the person that gave your wife this mis-information. Nowhere does it say that
a Co-signer must live in the same residence
as the loan applicant. Either go higher up
or cancel that application and make one
out somewhere else.
I wouldn't want to do business with that
company anyhow. |

Yes they are correct that is not true, so you should have them put it in writing, and then forward it to their supervisor or management. Then try another bank, and let them know you will not do business with them again. |

Have her apply for a credit card with Capital One, or some other bank that approved people with no credit history. Getting a personal loan was a bad idea in the first place because they interest rates are fixed-therefore the banks don't like to give these out to people who could possibly be a bad risk. However, they LOVE giving credit cards to people with no history becuase they can pretty much charge whatever interest they want if payments are missed, etc. So, a credit card is a much better idea to build credit.
As far as the loan being denied because of the mother not living in the same household, that is very odd...it might be a policy that the Navy Credit Union has, but generally a Co-Signer can reside anywhere--even across the country from the main borrower. |

Never heard of such a thing. Probably they could try another bank - your mom's bank. |

My husband co-signed for a loan for a buddy of his many years ago and they did not reside in the same household. Unless rules on co-signing have changed, I think the bank of loan officer is blowing smoke at you.
Go to another lender.....I can't believe that your wife can't get a loan as small as this on just her salary alone.....unless she has a poor credit rating, you as her spouse has a poor credit rating, you have not lived in your house long enough or she has not been employed at her current job long enough. |
