Could I get a credit card?
I don't know much about credit cards other than the absolute basics. I'm 18, in full-time education and only work 1 day a week so I don't earn much. I'm very careful with my money.

Bascically all I want a credit card for is buying stuff online that I can't use alternative payment methods for. I don't intend to buy anything on credit that I can't afford, being in debt doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

So my question is - do you think it's likely I'd get a card if I applied? Would it be worth getting one if I wasn't going to use it much? And can you suggest a card to apply for in my situation?

I have to make decisions everyday on whether to approve or deny people that apply for credit. If I had to give advice to people that are trying to start out building credit, this is the advice that I would give:

With you being a full time student, I would be very careful with applying for credit cards. The best card in your situation would be a secured credit card. This is the easiest credit card by far to get because a deposit is required upfront which is used as collateral against the credit card. For example, if you deposit $300, your credit line is $300. Sometimes the deposit is linked to a CD or savings account which can earn interest while building credit, so the deposit isn't just sitting there. Another benefit of secured cards is that you can increase the limit by adding to the deposit, which in turn can help your credit score because low balances with higher limits create a cushion between the avaiable credit and total debt. Also, later on after you demonstate that you can pay on time, you get the deposit back. I posted several links to some secured cards that may work for you. Based on some research I've done, Bank of America is the best overall secured card out there.

Good luck!

Hi, well it usually done on a points system meaning the more "credit" (house, mortgage, loans, catalogue etc) you have the more chance you have of getting one, crazy isn't it,
Do you have a normal bank accont visa or visa electron coz you can buy stuff online with them.

The best thing would be to go to your bank and speak to them
as they have a better idea of your financial situation, in my opinion its good to have in an emergency and if you totally trust yourself not to use it all the time, i have a bank of scotlland one it good...........also just thought i would mention that if you buy anything online with it you are safeguarded if anything went wrong!!

Hope this helps. :-)

Most credit cards expect you to make a min. of $1500 a month for a $500 limit. You could try a Rush card and that's prepaid.

why not upgrade your bank account as they give visa cards with the currant account and you can use this online no problem and then at least the bank can see what money comes in and goes out

Sure you could apply for a card. Try your locate bank first and thus, they are the easiest to get one. Don;t apply to AMEX, Discover, or etc, because they are high end cards, usually require some sort of credit history- which you dont have thus, their denial will hurt you and lower your credit score. If you have the option choose a lower credit limit about 500-1000.
Good luck.

Go for a student credit card for people with limited credit history. use it sparingly and pay off the balance in full each month and you'll have a good start to building a positive credit history.

I would look into a Prepaid Visa at your local retailer. There are activation fees but it is still a milliion times cheaper than interest rates and annual fees. There won't be any temptation to spend what you can't afford, and for online purchases they work exactly the same as the real deal. If you feel you need the credit to help increase your credit score, I would try a deposit type credit card. If you pay 500 as a deposit then that is your credit limit. No chance of getting caught in the vortex of debt. You still make a monthly payment but the 500 is there in case you default. It counts as a revoloving credit on your credit score whereas a prepaid card will not.
It's unfortunate but yes if you applied you probably could get a card. The credit card companies love to eat young just getting started college kids for breakfast!!

More likely able to get a debit card.

you can't apply for a credit card unless you have a bank account. Once you have a bank account then you can apply.
