Could I get a debit card at the age of seventeen?
Not a silly debit card you can only use in certain places... a proper one, like a Visa or something... I'm in the UK by the way...

Yea look at HSBC, or Halifax, maybe even a few more... ask to apply for a CURRENT ACCOUNT. If you go to their website you can use their Call Back service, and ask them the questions, requirements you need, and what documents are required to open an account.

(You are looking for a Visa Debit card, NOT a cashcard)

yeah i had 1 at 14 and was with natwest.

go somewhere they will give you a maestro or it was solo for under 16 i think then you can use that card pretty much anyhwere. Just dont get an electron card they are rubbish

vicky s
you have to be 18 to get a visa as its a credit card! i think you could probably get a debit card that allows you to pay for things taking the funds direct from your account. go and talk to someone at a bank

talkingformydog
Of course..... I opened an account for my 2 young ones were they put their pocket money

Banderes
Im under the Impression you need to be 18 for a CREDIT CARD,

But a Debit Card , taking £'s from your BANK Account is availiable now, Electron for starters but VISA debit is availiable,
BARCLAYS do one, but i would NEVER recommend Barclays Bank. Check the HSBC or someone.

I don't see why not, they only work if you are in credit, so no risk to the bank, why don't you go and ask for one?
One word of advice, NEVER have an overdraft if they offer you one! the Banks love you to owe them money! keep out of their clutches!!!

If you can open a bank account, you should be able to. You might need a co-signer (like your parents) to do that.

PIGGYBACKING: Despite its' virtually
unlimited potential, piggybacking is
not used by nearly as many consumers as
it should be. It's easy, effective,
and extremely fast. Unfortunately,
it's mostly used among parents and
siblings while those who can really
benefit stay in the dark.

How it works. Almost every credit
card or credit account will allow the
primary account holder to add on (at a
later date) what's known as an
"Authorized User" or "Secondary Account
Holder". In most cases, when this is
done, the entire account history
(retroactively) gets posted to the
authorized users credit report
regardless of their current age or
credit history!

For example. If it's a credit card
with a $10,000 limit which has been
paid as agreed for the last 10 years,
then that complete history will be
posted to the authorized users' credit
report. I once saw a clients' credit
report who used this technique with his
mother. He was only 24 at the time and
he had a $15,000 Gold credit card on
his report with history going back 11
years! I laughed as I thought to
myself that this kid would have had to
be approved when he was 13 years old
for this account to be his!

As you can see, this strategy is
usually only used by parents and their
children and in most cases with no
regard to the benefits the children are
reaping credit wise! In fact, in
recent years, due to its'
effectiveness, this technique has led
individuals with excellent credit
scores to "rent out" authorized user
accounts on one or even multiple credit
cards in return for a fee! I once
recall seeing an ad in USA TODAY for
just such an opportunity. Like most
good credit loopholes, I'm sure this
methods' days are numbered much like
what may be the case with...

I don't know about the UK but across the pond in the States if you open a bank account you can get a visa check card. It acts like a visa but it takes the funds from your checking account rather then being a revolving line of credit (that means a credit card that you can pay a minimum on each month instead of paying the whole debt off) Being 17 you can not legally sign a contract (at least here in the States) so you can't have a "real" credit card yet. Go to you local bank and talk to a representative about opening a checking account. Maybe one of your parents will have to sign on with you.

umm....surely you have to be 18 dont you? mind you...................i dunno :( sorry...............

With a debit card you can only spend what you have in your account. DON'T go for an overdraft, it will lead to trouble. A visa is a credit card, and you don't want to go into that until you are earning a decent wage to keep up the monthly payments. Ignore the letters that you can have a large loan, they only want to make money from the interest they will charge. Live within your means, and you will be fine. Check your balance every now again, so you won't get a nasty shock when your card is declined, as it goes too easily when you haven't cash in your wallet to check how much you have left to spend!
