Could buying a cheap car help my credit score go up!?
Ok i am trying to build my credit up so i had the idea that i would buy a cheap car for say $4K - $5K but i was gonna put down $2K as the deposit and try to pay it of within 6 months. could doing this help me or hurt me. I hear that buying from certain car lots can actually hurt your credit is this true?

You are correct in your thinking. Low = good for credit. Creditors like when people don't bite off more than they can chew. Buy it, pay it off quick, that will REALLY help you! Then go from there... the more you buy small things, and pay it off, the more lenders will trust you, because you pay things off quick.

First of all, don't buy a car just to build credit...buy it though if you want or need the car. If the company that gives you credit report to the credit bureaus and you make at least your expected payment every month on time then yes it will go towards helping to build your credit. There are many ways to build your credit though so if you don't need the car do something else like department store credit cards, gas cards, major credit cards or even a secured card if you can't get a regular card. Capitol One have great secured cards for only a fraction down of the amount of credit you get.

MrGuy
How expensive the car is doesnt matter at all. Consistent payments, low income-to-debt ratio, and the type of loan you get for the car will all effect your credit score. (i.e. If its a personal loan, vs a car loan.) Most likely at 5k it will be a personal loan. The different car lots has nothing to do with your credit and it wont hurt or harm it. Make the payments on time, and always pay at least slightly more than the minimum payment due. Thats how you get good credit.

K.C.
You'll need to make monthly payments for at least a year to get a positive effect but as far as buying from certain lots it doesn't effect or affect your credit score as long as payments are made on time and the full amount before the due date then your credit should get better.....without knowing your current credit situation and the typeso f accounts you have, credit history, it'll be hard for someone to tell you if it'll help or hurt you by just getting the car.....so basically if you have applied and/or recieved a lot of creidt/inquiries it could help but on the other hand if you have no existing installment loan, or loans period it will definitely help you because creditors like to see a mixture of credit.....go to www.myfico.com to learn more about what can help and hurt your credit!

SlimMick
Probably not..."Buy Here/Pay Here" car lots almost always do not report monthly payments to the credit bureaus...You'd be better off using that money to get a secured credit card and building a timely history of paying on time...Any increase in your credit score would not be immediately...it would take time

cbm
if you make the payments on time, or even early, then yes it will help your credit. maybe not by much, but everything counts.

start missing those payments though, and things will go from bad to worse.

golferwhoworks
the lender must report your payment history if not it will not help a bit

callie
It is true. Do not buy from low lying dealerships. Buy only from upstanding large dealerships. They have plenty of inventory right now and it is in your best interest to get in with them. Down payments do not increase your credit score...keep your deposit and invest it otherwise...savings acct. perhaps. Larger dealers report regularly to credit agencies...the little places do not do a standard monthly report...so that hurts your credit because they are not consistent. Hope this helps.

keep in mind credit takes 6 months to reflect any progress. you can earn credit by doing several things. Paying bills on time ie. house, car, creditcard, apartment , *making payments to principal balances*, not checking your score too frequently, not applying for tons of loans and credit cards! Cars are tricky, it does look really good to put a deposit down and your more likley to get a better APR because of that. Keep in mind, that depending on your interest rate, you will be paying more for your car then 5K. Theres no quick fix to credit scores, keep your nose to the grind stone and it will eventually work out! good luck!

You should pay cash for your car. Just saw a fabulous Lincoln on craigslist for $1500.

bud68
It will only help if (1) you make all payments on time and (2) the lender reports your payment history to the credit bureaus.

not sure if 6 months will do the trick. they like to see constant monthly payments over longer periods of time. that will get your credit up. as far as certain car lots, i dont know. maybe so, if u take out a payday or title loan it usually looks bad on your cred, so its possible

If you want to build your credit, I would start with a credit card if your young. Or buying something from a store and putting it on monthly payments. When you a buy a car and have to make payments they usually check to see if you have credit to start with, and how much money you make. If you don't make much money, and have no credit they may not approve you.

Steve D
You need to make sure that whoever you buy from reports your payments to the credit bureaus. If they don't report, then they don't help. The best way to do this would be to make the deposit and take the car loan from a credit union or bank, which should also give you a lower interest rate. Most places that self-finance will charge a somewhat higher rate for the loan.
