Kimba | Could this be EBAY/PayPal fraud? |
Someone bought an item from me and they only have 2 feedbacks (both positive). The eBay info says they're located in Canada, but when the person paid via PayPal, the shipping address is in Michigan, USA. The shipping address is not only unconfirmed, but the name on the PayPal account does not match the name on the shipping address/eBay account.
I'm nervous to send the item because I had this happen before, where someone stole another person's PayPal account (and credit card) and after I had shipped the item to the fraudulent buyer, PayPal realized the fraud, reached into MY checking account that was linked to PayPal and recovered the money. Then, I was out my item and my money.
Does this sound legit and is there anything I can do to protect myself? |

YES! It does indeed sound like fraud. Your BEST bet is to contact eBay / Paypal and ask them what you should do. A lot of people ONLY ship to to verified addresses and / or addresses that match their billing information. Two positive feedbacks DOES NOT mean that the individual in question IS NOT new and has just moved, but it COULD ALSO BE that the individual used used other screen names in which he / she has to try to fool you. People on here have NOTHING to gain by actually helping you with YOUR BEST INTEREST IN MIND, and NOTHING TO LOSE IF THEY TELL YOU WRONG. You may get a bad feed back if you do not honor the sale, but it would be worth it to have done the right thing. Good luck and I hope you come out okay, God bless you for trying to do what's right! |

I would say do all of the below, when in doubt, always call Ebay/Paypal's customer service, this will set the record straight. This way you won't have to go through what you previously went through. |

Sounds fishy, all right.
Contact the buyer, or the name on the Paypal account, to confirm before you send anything.
eBay and Paypal will provide you with contact numbers if you request it and tell them the reason why. |

They might be buying for another person or they may have a business in a different country. I have a different paypal account to my ebay because my old paypal account didn't work and they wouldn't accept my details as you are only allowed one paypal account per person, in the end I used another persons. Wait until the money has cleared into your bank account and then ship the item - send them a message telling that you will send once the payment has cleared. Hope this helps. |

Contact the buyer and have them confirm their name and address that is on ebay.
and also contact Ebay and Pay Pal before sending Item. Explain it to them, they can help. It sounds like there is something wrong. |

Whoa. I would contact PayPal customer service and ask them what to do. Tell them of your past experience, and have them investigate it in advance of shipping anything. They can check their records probably, and see if the supposed buyers account was altered at some point and the info changed.
It does sound fishy.

Thinking about it, do call them. Ask the rep you talk to, to make a note of your call...ask for a case number. That way if you do get jerked around, you have something on record. |

You should make a note on your 'for sale' items that you will only ship to confirmed addresses. The whole situation sounds a little fishy to me. I just recently had to cancel my credit card because someone used my information to start a fraudulent paypal account. So, I know the feeling.
Personally, I would not ship anything to an unconfirmed address, especially if the names don't match. |

The catch 20 with this problem is that you cant monitor and police each of your customers because of speculation. You are obligated to send the item, or simply return their money have make your auctions where they should be pre-approved if this is happening too often to you. |

Before sending the item contact them and ask them why the difference and where they want the item sent.
Maybe they changed the shipping name and address because they want it to go to a friend of family member. I have done that before. Usually I will contact the seller and tell them this, first. |

Whenever you sell, note all the bidders that you only ship to wherever you only ship it to....But on ebay address, people can call it whatever..sometime it doesnt matter... Whats matter is the paypal shipping address, if it says unconfirmed in payapl account, then ask the buyer again before shipping......Do not ship unless you have the money..simple |

Contact EBay and tell them that until it is confirmed they are good person that you are with holding the item? I'm sure they can investigate and get to the bottom with their clients... after all EBay has to know their clients? Doesn't hurt to ask at best |
