MizzTavarez | Could this work???? |
My husband and i didnt pay on his credit card since april because of financial problems, now they are calling and wanting half of the amount by the end of next month. which is impossible for us because its a little over a grand. i was thinking of just sending in what i can afford, probably 250. do you think i can resovlv that way or should we just cancel and make the payments. its already showing bad and we need to get it out of the way. They just want us to pay the grand and keep the card open and make our payments which i really dont want the card anymore because of the VERY high rate they are charging us. Additional Details thank everyone. I did talk to the super and she told me if we didnt do anything about it they would take us to court and have it deducted from my husbands paycheck. |

You should have been in contact with them the whole time in order to arrange payments. Call them now and set up a plan. Agree to keep the card open only if they'll reduce your interest rate by 5 - 10%. |

Call one of those credit card counselors pronto and get some help. You will have to cut up and never use the card again but it would be worth it. A consolidation specialist even if you only have the one credit card. They DO work. I am here to testify to that. They may be able to get your rate lowered and you would get a reasonable sized payment to make but you can never be late or it is voided. It really does work. I just can't give you the name of the one I used! |

If you call the company to make other arrangements for paying other that what they set forth to you, you may have payments reduced. If you don't get results with one credit counselor, hang up politely and call back. Then get it paid off as soon as you can.
Some credit card companies will offer to you a one time payment of a much lesser amount, realizing that you can not pay and know that by them compounding the interest, which they are sooo adept at, that it will just keep escalating the payments for such an extended time that they will more than likely make out better by offering a "settlement" payment. It usually comes from their side. Each company is different with that policy, but do call them and see what they are willing to do to help you work this out. It is not a new situation for them and if you talk it out, your results in being successful in getting what you think is a reasonable monthly payment are greater. |

Send what you can. Credit card companies are happy to get what they can. Call and tell them you want to cancel your account (DO NOT let them talk to you of it) and you will continue to make payments each month until it is paid off. |

Do not let them bully you into anything you cannot afford.
VERY IMPORTANT Get anything they promise you in writing and don't send them any money until you have the deal you agree to in writing. They are nortorious liars. |

Can you transfer the balance to a lower interest credit card? If not cancel the card., and pay as quick as you can, and cut your losses. |

Having worked in the collections department of Bank of America, I can tell you that any amount that you send in will be good sign. Call the company up and tell them that you are under financial stress. If you can afford to make payment of say 100$ a month, tell them that you want to set up a payment plan with them.
Also negotiate w/them. I typciall use negotiate where I would lower the interest rate of a client sometimes from 28 to 18%, if they would the company take out a payment automatically from their bank account. I am not suggesting at all that this is something you should bargain for, but it gives you an idea that these companies will work with you.
Remember when bargaining that the companies if you dont pay have to write the debt off, which hurts their bottom line.
What I would do is, while getting balance paid off, have the account suspended. Because you have not made timely payments it will hurt your credit score and might make it harder to open new accounts. Once you pay of this account, start making timely payments on it so that your fico score will increase.
While on the phone remember that if the person on the phone is not helpfull, their are supervisors who you can talk with.I hope that I have been able to help you. |

You need to call them and ask for a supervisor you should have no problems closing the account and setting up a payment plan. their main goal is getting their money. |

they cant make you pay a grand if you cant afford it, just phone them up and tell them how much you can afford to pay, they cant refuse your offer or get bailiffs because you have offered payment, cut the card up, see citizens advice centre, im sure that you can come up with a payment arrangement that will suit everyone, most of all dont worry about it, they cant kill you, or send you to jail. |

pay what you can, get it paid off and switch to a zero APR introductory rate. I never understood why credit card companies gave people with bad credit such high interest rates and high limits. call them, i am sure they will be willing to help.... |

Here's what I suggest: Talk to the credit card company and explain your circumstances. Arrange to send them what you can afford ($250) and make payments on the balance until it is paid off, then cancel the card (I don't think they will let you cancel the card if you still owe a balance anyway). You have to be sure that while you're paying it off you do not use the card again. (One story I heard was about someone freezing his credit cards in a block of ice in the freezer to keep from using them!) One other possible strategy is to sign up for a different, lower-interest card and transferring the balance. But that won't help you retire the debt and may tempt you to run it up even higher -- and it also only works if your credit is still good enough to get such a card. |

its called a "full and fianl settlement" tell them you can pay this as a one off as long as they will cancel the rest of the debt, a lot of companies accept it as they are at least getting some of their money back |
