NW_LondonDr | Credit Card Fraud.? |
A paperless credit card I had for last 5 years was fradulently used for the last 18 months. As I use it very very rarely, and having used in Dec. 2006, I checked the e-mail statement. I was shocked to have owed above 5000/-. Immediately I called them and cancelled the card. A chap from the bank will call me in a couple of days' time and will go through the transactions. The online account allows only 12 months of statements. I suspect that there were some bulk purchases and as I never recieved anything at my door step, I am off course vindicted. One little favour this scammer did to me was to have repaid all the balance for a couple of days in July this year and there is a transaction card details that doesn't match the cards I own. ( UK)
My question is : How should I approach the bank chap, when he asks me that how come I never realised the fraud, ( the minimum payment was going from my account? )
I rarely use the card, and hence is my lethargy!! Any kind advice is sweet b4 xmas. |

It happened to my girl, just tell him what you told us and let him sort it |

i work in customer services for a large american bank in the uk
when we get call like this we make up 'cases' and then this is dealt with by the fraud dept
they will investigate thoroughly by contacting the merchants it usually takes around 6 to 8 wks but as yours seems to be from over a year ago it might even take longer
they will freeze the transactions so you wont have to pay until the invetigation ends
tell the truth and try not to worry |

The fact that the fraudster cleared the balance for 2 days, shows that he is aware of your transactions pertaining to this card. He may have transferred from a 'more risky' card into yours. As you were the one who raised alarm and dispute the balance, they must sort it out. There is a time limit of upto 3 yrs. in the Uk for back dated transaction record verification. I am sure the bank has the card details of repayment and your monthly d/d details. Once they do not match, they investigate and refund all that is owed. Need not worry and enjoy the Christmas. |

The banks are used to this. They don't really expect you to be checking a statement all the time when you expect it to have nothing on it! It's these card that are targetted the most and the fraud is normally discovered in the same way you noticed. Unless you go through your bank statements with a fine tooth comb then you wouldn't notice the min payment leaving your account. The bank will understand this. Unless it would be obvious to them that you SHOULD have noticed it then they will still pay out (eg if you have paper statements coming through the door, paid by invoice etc). In your case, nobody would have noticed either. |

Explain it just as you have here, you rarely use it and had automatic "bill payer", so didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Should you lie about it, it WILL catch up to you sooner or later. |

Many people dont check their bank statements item by item & unless it was a large amount you would not necessarily notice. If the payments came off automatically you were not alerted to the fact they were being made anyway |

Report this crime immediately to the police so you receive a crime number. This will stop the bank in their tracks trying to accuse you as you have been to police and are happy for them to investigate the crime further, as others have said just be honest with answers, warning the banks can be quite nasty and they will accuse you of spending the money, be strong and honest and they will cancel the cards and wipe the debt. Good Luck!!! |

Tell him exactly what you told us--that you rarely use it, so don't check the statements.
You won't be the first person to tell him that, I assure you. |

Just tell him the truth, of course if you are trying to avoid payment make the lie as simple as posible and write it down keep it somewhere safe. |

Tell him what you told us, that you dont use them often and you didn't notice and as soon as you did you did what you could. These days they have cameras everywhere they could have used the card so the chances are they will inform the police and do some digging. If the card was used on line then they will have times and dates it was used and also addresses the items were sent to. Dont worry about it, the banks deal with this all the time. Just tell the truth. Oh and how the hell did they get the pin number, is it a member of your family???? But no matter what as long as you tell the truth u will be OK |

Dear Victim A,
'Phone your local Trading Standards Office AT ONCE and talk to them before talking to ANYONE else. They are a Government body and represent the Consumer ; that is, YOU.
It is their job to combat trading dishonesty of all kinds and they know the law and frequently workwith the Police in fighting fraud.
Good Luck& Happy Christmas!!!

if your like me once you set up the direct debit and they dont hassle you,you leave it tell the bank that. As we have become more reliant on plastic fraud is easier because we dont check as well as we should when the statements arrive. Try to find out where the money went they should then have a record of the del address also think of contacting the police as this is theft |
