St.Jeb | Credit Card Reform is Needed by the U.S. Economy? |
I am wondering if anyone agrees that the credit card industry needs to be drastically reformed in this country to combat our recent economic dilemna.
I have watched all presedential debates on both sides, and no-one has talked about this dreadful issue.
More and more Americans are being tied up with outrageous interest rates, fees, etc. by financial institutions which slow down our ecomony, and also gives it a false sense of productivity.
What has happened, is the financial institutions have preyed on virtually every American. If you have a mail box, you will agree. With the pre-approvals, store cards, etc., people go out and use the CC as a loan, spending things beyond their means in order to keep up with society, giving the economy a false sense that it was doing well when reality it was being hurt. No regulation of a credit agreement's interest rate is the ultimate problem. As of right now, a financial institution can raise your rate for almost any reason to almost any rate. Additional Details Restraint? I know I know, people should have restraint....but that is not going to fox the problem. I believe the problem stems from shotty deals the CC gives the consumer, sucking them in with 0% APR and then socking it to them 6 months later with 29.90% rates. Put it this way, most consumers have every intention of paying their debts, the playing field is uneven though, the greediness of the financial companies are bankrupting this country, not vice versa. Sure, some consumers will abuse their finances, but it is up to the borrower to qaulify them not vice versa. It really hits our economy to the core! People buy things that are not really being backed by anything other than their desire and hope to pay for this thing in the future with the finance companies contributing 100% to the deliquency.
It is like giving an alcholic a beer. |

I COMPLETELY agree!!!
I am so thankful to my grandma who taught me to keep on top of my finances. As it stands, I've manage to get married, graduate college, have 3 kids and3 credit cards, and the ONLY debt my husband and I have ever had is our car loan.
I personally think there should be a max to credit card debt and if too much gets accumulated, then your card is locked. |

Yes and no. What we REALLY need is for Americans to exercise some restraint and stop spending beyond their means. None of this would have happened if people would be content to live within their ability to pay.
Were the credit card and lending companies preying upon the poor? Absolutely. But these people are adults, they didn't bother reading their contracts, and they bought homes, cars, etc. that they clearly couldn't afford. We need some individual responsibility too. |

Yes.
They need to make it harder to get a credit card.
People using credit cards are just as stupid as credit card companies who give cards to those they know cannot afford to pay the bill but have no sense but to ring the bill right up. Debt and more debt. Then collectors call, people go bankrupt, etc.
Do not use a credit card if you will not be able to pay the bill or at least a payment when the bill will come in a month.
Also interest rates, etc. that is what you accept when you even use a credit card.
People using credit cards and those giving people credit cards, knowing they cannot afford it, a cycle of idiots. |

None of them really hit on the topic because credit buroughs(can't spell that word!) give a ton of money to congress to keep their business going. It's like lobbying. |

Well, it's not like anybody forces us to get credit cards, let alone credit cards with usurious rates. All those techniques you complain about, well, it's just advertising -- don't tell me you are incapable of resisting advertising.
If there is anything that this past year has shown us, it's that there will always be a way for individuals to be greedy and stupid with money.
If you manage to outlaw one, I'm positive that people will find another way to spend too much, borrow too much, save too little, buy depreciating assets instead of buying appreciating assets, and in the end, they will find a way to blame it all on somebody else. |

While I agree that the credit card industry needs to be reformed, I disagree as to your comments about a couple of things:
1. Credit Cards are actually a stimulant to the economy...people use them to buy tons of stuff they don't need.
2. While the interest rates are a bit high you can often renegotiate them with a good payment history, however you do have to ask for this.
Now with that in mind my idea of the reform would be to find a way of calculating what a "Safe" amount of bad debt people should be allowed to rack up..after which the account should terminate and the person should be required to pay it off. That way the economic indicators won't get false positives with sudden up ticks in spending. |

You fail to mention the other side of the coin: irresponsible spending by consumers. No one is forced to run up big balances on credit cards; its a matter of choice and responsibility. |

Yes! and again he is right. These companies are now taking advantage of the more uneducated poor and they are the more desperate to get things that they would have to wait years to save for like big screen TVs. We now have a problem and the Government will do nothing or step in and get these companies to do right to fix what is now out of control. For those
who said people should show restraint Yes but that will not fix the problem we have now we need to crack down on these companies and that will help a lot faster than just telling people to stop over spending (as they should also do.) |

Is the problem with the credit card companies or the idiots who used them beyond their means? Now I am all for stopping the junk mail that I get, I get one or two CC offers every day. That is a lot of junk. People have to learn to live within their means. |
