Credit Card courtesy check loophole?
I've got a credit card that sends me courtesy checks with 0% interest for a year. What's to stop me from writing a check out to myself and depositing it in my high interest savings account (HSBC) for a year, earning 5% interest on it, and using that money for nothing other than paying off that cc debt? They charge a cash advance fee, but cap it off at $75, which is considerably less than the interest I would make on it if I maxed it out.

So far, I cant find a single downside to all of this, as long as I be good and dont touch the money for anything else.

Can anyone else see a downside to this?
Additional Details
Based on the responses, I'll add a few more pieces of info:

- Dont have any outstanding credit card bills to pay, other than the student loans, but at this point, im almost done anyways
- I can write the check out to cash, as I've done before to pay off other credit cards, and deposit it in my account, so that wont be an issue
- The CC company can increase my rates, but I believe the 0% checks are fixed 0% for the stated time period, but I'll double check that to make sure
- I don't use that CC to make general purchases. For that, I use my Citi Dividend Platinum Select - 5% cash back on purchases made at gas stations, supermarkets, and drug stores, 1% back everywhere else. I havent found anything better yet.

Thank you to everyone who has responded already! I found your answers very useful!

Careful. Are you sure they are courtesy checks?, Some are balance transfer checks. There is a difference. I would pay off the student loan with the check if you have enough cash advance limit. You said you didn't have much time left on the loan. This would save you some interest from your student loan. Just make sure you make the payment on time.

Oops, read the fine print. That check is a cash advance. So the credit card company starts charging you interest from the day the check is cashed.

The 0% cards and checks always have a downside. If you miss one payment or do not pay back all of the money you borrowed on time, you get socked with 12 months of interest plus a penalty.

Beware! Nothing in life is free especially in financial matters.

why i never thing about something like this?
i like your idea a lot

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Just make sure the interest rate on the savings account is fixed.

the loophole is that if you use the 0% .....and then make standard purchases using the card......all your payments go toward the 0% balance ONLY....any charges you make will continue to accrue interest until the entire 0% balance is paid off.

Not really a loop hole. Some times credit card companies will "rate jack" you by raising your interest rate considerable without notice. As long as your investing in something where your money is readily accessible I cannot see a downside. Just remember to make your monthly payments.

You can also pay your credit card bill with the courtesy check.

what was better was when GM sent them & let me write the check to cash, deposit it in my bank, pay the credit card off w/ the money & gave me 5% back toward my next car. No cash advance fee either.

They caught on & don't do that anymore. :(

The credit card companies can increase your rate whenever they want, even while you're still paying off the balance or *before* you start paying off the balance. So it's a gamble at best, like a game of interest rate chicken. Check your terms of use, I'll bet it says something about being able to raise your rate at any time somewhere in there.

Jim
If you use it exactly that way, and everything goes smoothly, you'll be OK. However, be aware that credit card companies have fine print in their contracts that say they can raise the interest rates anytime at their discretion. If they do that, they will have to send you a notice ahead of time, and you will have the option of cancelling the credit card and paying it off at the old rate. However, if you don't respond to the notice, you're suddenly hooked for a high interest rate until/unless you pay it off. Also, they hope they'll get you hooked, and you won't be able to pay them off before the rate goes up anyway.

well ive done this and it works but you really have to know the terms and conditions, sometimes they make you have at least two transactions in a billing period or make you pay like .5% of the total balance in some cases.

it works just do your homework.

I'm not sure you can write a check to yourself.
