anniewalker | Credit Card offers in my ex's name are coming to my address. What can I do? |
This is weird. I've been divorced for years and my ex didn't have my address. Now I am remarried. He has recently been made aware of my new address (but not new last name) from court documents regarding child support - he has never paid me any and the court is trying to collect. In the past 4 months I have been getting pre-approved credit card offers at my current address in his name and in my OLD married name and in his and my name jointly. So, I am now Mrs. Smith but when I was married to him I was Mrs. Jones. I am getting credit card offers for Mr & Mrs Jones at my current address. He has never, ever lived at this address and I just moved to this address after I remarried.
So, my questions:
1. How could this have happened?
2. What can I do to protect myself from any fraud?
thanks! |

1. They do searches through the credit bureaus and buy "leads"
2. You can put a fraud alert on your credit reports, you can also send the credit bureaus a copy of your driver's license and social security card to prove your identity. |

To add to the previous posters, you can also opt out of these pre-approved offers by removeing your name from the national mailing list, go to https://www.dmaconsumers.org and follow the instructions. |

Do the both of you a favor and run all such offers through a shredder |

Your address got updated on a mailing list from court records. I recommend that you exercise your opt out option on the pre-approved credit cards. Also, if you have a concern about identity theft there are several companies with good identity theft insurance plans. Shop around and find one that will cover liability and help you clean it up. I have mine with Zander insurance. |

Definitely put a fraud alert on your account with the three major credit reporting agencies. |

Disregard stupid answers! These speak for themselves! Just because you got divorced from your ex spouse, does not mean you also got divorced from their credit rating! It would be nice if this was the case.
What I would do?
1. Put a fraud alert on your credit reports through one of the 3 credit bureaus. This will stop credit offers shortly.
2. Send a copy of your divorce decree during this time and upgrade all your information, including your new name and your maiden name before your first marriage.
3. Get a credit monitoring service!!!!! You need to keep an eye on your credit reports and see if anything comes up you don't recognise! There is a really good section on credit monitoring too. This is the best way to check up on your credit.
Your free to check your credit as often as you want to without damaging your credit score.
You at at that pivotal point where things can go drastically wrong if your not paying attention!!!!!!!!!!!
4. Go to the website below and read it all!! You will find a lot of relevant info and get the RSS feed too. This site is being updated with more information being added to all the time and this is a great one to stay on top of!
I had my identity stolen and I got my credit score from 480 to 709 with the help I got from here! This site is worth your time reading. |

First Steve due to the Data Protection Act Courts can not disclose peoples information to anyone let alone mailing lists. The info would not come from there. The Court will withhold addresses when requested.
In answer to your question, if you are now suddenly getting mail like that it means he has probably filled in forms using your address and info as you say he has recently found it out.
I know this because I started getting mail here for a former resident and creditors were chasing him. I notified my landlord and he had words with appropriate people. He was told that this person would have had to have given my address on forms he filled in, it looked like he was trying to commit fraud.
Check the electoral register for your address see if he has registered his name you wouldn't neccessarily know about this until well after the fact. You have to prove with ID and letters who lives at your house in order to get a "strangers" name removed from your address. When your card comes to put your name on the Electoral Register (my council sends one every year) make sure you tick the coloumn that stops your name being on the one that is open to all and sundry to buy and view. Also have a word with your local police I was told if the mail to my property continued there were certain charges they could make, and I didn't even know the man the mail was for. |
