I have about $3,000 worth of credit debt. 4 of them are past due and 2 went to collections. My mom is paying them off for me. i hear once you mess up your credit it takes up to 7 years after youve paid the debt for it to be wiped off your record. my good friend was in a ton of debt and she still lives with her parents at 23 because she messed up her credit when she was 19/20 years old and its still on her record whenever she tries to get an apartment to lease. Good luck! I hope i helped! :) |

Well ... little by little it will get better as time goes on ... but it will probably take 3 - 4 years of good credit behavior before it has little impact on your credit score and 7 years before it's completely off your record.
And Yes ... this most definitely could affect your chance of getting an apartment. Businesses don't like to take chances on people with poor credit histories as it suggests that you are irresponsible and may put them or their property (the apartment) at risk. After 7 months of good behavior ... they may very well rent to you ... but ... the rent may be higher and the security deposit may be higher as well.
Good Luck. |

35% of your credit score is based on your payment history..It takes 7 years for late payments to stop hurting your credit but it hurts your score less as the months pass. Make sure you check your credit about a month after those are paid, as sometimes the collections will still show as unpaid, and you may have to contact them to correct your credit info. Don't close your credit cards,(unless they have unnecessary annual fees, etc) but keep your balances at $0 or low balances. 30% of your credit score is based on how maxed out your revolving credit lines are, so keep the total that you owe vs. the total of your limits at a low %. Also, if you only have a few lates, I don't think this is going to hurt you getting an apt. it doesn't help, but landlords are really looking to make sure you don't have a judgment from another landlord (ie. $4,000 for not paying rent and damages to apt at prior apt, etc..). |

talk with your mother about how she is going to be paying them you might be able to make arrangements with the companies to mark your credit report as pays as agreed once its paid in full. but make sure you get everything in writing |

Yes, it will affect your approval for an apartment unless it's a private party that does not care about your credit. Unfortunately, it will take a long time (7 years) for your credit score to improve; however, keep paying off the cards and try to wait for the apartment until you are free and clear of debt. Sounds like you've made a few mistakes but it'll get better. Don't spend unless you absolutely need to. |
