Credit Score Changes for 10 points, Alex?
I have 3 quick questions regarding the information used to calculate credit scores:
1. I'm a college student who just applied for my first 2 credit cards a few months ago. Roughly how much does your credit score increase each year if you pay off your balances in full?
2. I know applying for additional credit lowers your score. How long does it take before your credit score is no longer penalized for opening these new credit lines?
3. How far retrospective is the credit utilization ratio? Is it the ratio of credit used for the past 6 months? 1 year? 10 years?
1) This varies with everyone, how often you are using the card(s), what the balances are, etc. Considering that there are a number of different factors in addition to paying off balances, you cannot link the overall change to any one factor.
2) Credit inquiries remain on your report and are calculated in your score for two years. What you want to do is space out the inquiries, say 6 months apart, so lenders do not get the impression you are opening lines of credit all at once.
3) Monthly - the ratio is calculated at every update and built into the score - this is not really a look-back ratio, but rather a current ratio.
