d.a.f.f.y. | Credit card interest rate jumped to 30%! Why? |
My husbands Washington Mutual credit card jumped to 30% interest. We have never been late on a payment and we pay way more than the minimum in order to pay it off. Right now the balance is $423.00 (which I am paying off tomorrow). My husband phoned the company and asked to have the interest rate reduced and they told him "No" and if he didn't like it he could get another card. I will be so happy to pay them off and be rid of that card altogether! I just was wondering why the interest rates are jumping up so high? Our American Express card has a much higher balance and is only 15%! What's going on? |

It's called universal default. WAMU is notorious for doing this, but it is well within their rights. This is usually buried in the the fine print of your credit card agreement. It basically says that if you are more than 30 days late on any payment to anyone, the interest rate on your credit card could shoot up. They can also raise your rates if you max out other credit cards. There can be numerous excuses for them to rate jack you. Chase did this to me and I filed a complaint with the government agency that regulates credit cards. I got a call from Chase's corporate office within a few days of filing the complaint. They said if I agreed to close the account, I would be refunded for all of the interest they charged after jacking my interest rate. It's worth a try. Good luck! |

It's another classic example of the "big boys" screwing the people. When I had pay-pal credit card, it was sold to Providian, months later it was sold to WAMU.
I too have noticed my interest rate slowly rise. I am going to take the advice they gave you, pay it off this month and never use it again.
If everybody gets sick and tired of these major banks doing what they want to do and if people went back to using cash, then and only then would it hurt their bottom line. I have gone back to the cash business, pay for everything now in cash, just paying off credit cards and once they are all paid, burning them. Best bet, get a line of credit from a credit union just in case you need funds for an emergency. You only pay interest on what you use and a lot less interest.
Congress is supposed to be working on a bill to stop this nonsense, but we all know that it will never get the votes to pass |

LOL.
WaMu is about to go under. They are DESPERATE for money.
They are offering a 1 year cd at 5% interest. But they will be out of business before anyone can claim their interest.
Oh, btw, just because WaMu is about to go under does not mean you do not have to pay the bill. They will get their money from you.
WATCH them closely. They are desperate this month. |

That's insane!
Good on you for paying it off tomorrow!
I would then get the scissors and cut it up!
Get another credit card with a lower interest rate if you need one but not with the same company.
I have no idea why they would raise the interest so high, it would be interesting to find out! |

If you play with snakes. Sooner or later you will get bit. You got bit.
Sooner or later everybody gets bit.
Don't play the credit card game. Pay as you go. Live on less money than you make. You will not have payments. You will have money and you will not have to worship the great fico.
Credit cards and the fico score is designed to get you in debt and keep you in debt.

Don't carry balances, and no that is not hard to do because if you purchase more on that card in a month's time than you can comfortably pay off, you are living beyond your means to pay. Interest rates and other fees are of little concern to those who pay that credit card bill before interest ever hits. |

Basically they don't want you as a customer. It's a win-win situation for them: as things stood, they weren't making money from you, so they've instated a punitive interest rate. If you stay, they make money; if you go, they stop losing money. So go! |

I'm not sure ,but I think it's illegal to charge that much interest on a credit card. You might what to check with the U.S Dept of Commerce on that one.
Loan sharks have better rates than that. |
