Gayle | Credit card question? |
Hi, I'm asking this because this is my first credit card and I'm not sure if this is possible. I don't want to call and ask the company who issued the card because they won't appreciate what I want to do. I have a 2,000 credit line. I've used almost all of it up. I get a "0" APR for nine months as an introductory deal. Also, "0" finance charge for nine months. If I pay off all of the money before the nine months are over, can I just cancel the card and walk away without having anything more to pay? It seems as if I should be able to. They won't like it because they will not have made any money off the deal but they can't charge me something for doing this, right? Thanks. |

Absolutely you can do this. Your FICO score might take a hit if you close the account, though.
If you are going to continue using debt (which I don't recommend) your best bet is to pay off the entire balance and leave the card open so you still have that $2,000 credit showing on your account. You could also charge small items on the account, then pay it off once you receive your statement. That will do the most to help your FICO score. |

check your terms and conditions, but usually the answer is yes - I have done the same thing a couple of times! |

You can do this but it wont be good for your credit. Just keep the card and dont use it. |

Yes, as long as you pay them back what you owe, you'll have paid them no extra money, but remember, credit card companies don't only make their money from you. They make their money from charging the shop 1-3% for the convenience of using a secure system and not having to bank all that cash.
Somebody else will probably have more to say on that. |

Never hesitate to call the company and ask specific question.s This is a business arrangement, not schoolyard politics. |

Yes you are correct. Just make sure to pay it all off in 9 months and you will be set! |

BEWARE!!!!!
The whole reason for the 9 months introductory rate is to get people to take the card, they already know that the a certain percentage will pay off the balance and that a certain percentage of people will carry the balance....
MAKE SURE YOU PAY IT OFF>>>AND DO NOT GET ANY MORE CREDIT UNTIL YOU DO THIS!!!! |

Yes you can |

It sounds feasible, but what credit card company will carry
you nine months without assessing an interest charge?
I doubt if you can get by without some interest. Did you read
the fine print in the brochure they always send with the new card? I feel that you are going to be assessed, the advertisement was just a come on. Find out and let your answer and question know! |

First of all, you should never use more than 30-50% of the credit limit on a credit card because it will lower your credit score. Second, you can pay off the balance, but do not cancel the card - that will lower your credit score - just don't use the card, but leave it open. No, they would not have made any money off you as far as interest is concerned, but they have made money off the merchants you used to pay for something with the credit card because they charge fees to merchants - from 1.5 to 3.5 % for each charge. So, they have made money just not from you paying interest. Please don't cancel the card, just pay it off and in the future do not use more than 30% of the balance at any time. Protect your credit score and don't cancel the card. |
