Well, it is hard to get an unsecured credit card when you have poor credit. But a secured credit card would be a good investment. My fiance did an unsecured credit card about a year and 1/2 ago and then just 2 months ago he was approved for an unsecured line of credit.

To boost your credit score:
The first thing you will need to do is call the three major credit reporting agencies and request a free copy of your credit report.

www.equifax.com
www.experian.com
www.transunion.com

Then once you get those in the mail (7-10 days) there will be a dispute form attached to the reports. Fill those out for every negative account on your report regardless. Fax, mail go online whatever it takes to get those submitted as quickly as possible. Then those companies must answer your dispute within 30 days or it is removed from your credit report completely. So that will eliminate some things, hopefully.

Then make sure you pay all your revolving accounts to below 50% of your credit limits.

Make sure that you make all your payments no more than 20 days from the date it is due.

Good Luck!

Your better off with a secured card with reasonable fees than an unsecured card with really high fees. And no, there isn't a "good" card out there for people who have a histories of not paying their bills. Many secured credit lines can be opened with about a $300 deposit. If you manage to get an unsecured card somehow, you'll pay at least that much in fees just to set the damn thing up and you won't get it back- ever.

There is a free consumer website at http://www.bad-credit-credit-card-for-people-with-bad-credit.info/ that has a free list of credit cards companies that issue secured and unsecured credit cards to people with bad credit.

First let's look at the secured credit card for bad credit. A secured credit card requires that you deposit money with the issuing bank, and the bank will issue a credit card in the same amount for your use. Secured cards are guaranteed to be approved, because the bank has your deposit money in case you do not pay your balance. A secured credit card for bad credit operates much like a regular credit card. You receive a monthly statement, and you pay your minimum monthly payment or the balance in full each month. You are charged an interest rate, annual fee and possibly other fees for a secured credit card account.

Be aware that with a secured credit card for bad credit, your charges are not deducted from the deposit you have with the issuing bank. The bank is simply holding your deposit in the case that you default on your credit card balance. You must pay your monthly payments, and owe the bank the balance that you have charged on the credit card. You cannot refuse to pay simply because the bank is holding a deposit without further damaging your credit.

A second option for getting a credit card for bad credit is to get an unsecured credit card. Unsecured credit cards are available for bad credit clients, however, the issuing banks charge high fees to cover the risk of extending credit to a bad credit client. You can expect to pay anywhere from $200-$350 or more in fees which the bank will keep, you do not get that money back. Those fees are upfront costs for obtaining a unsecured credit card for bad credit. In some cases, the bank will allow you to pay the fees over two or more months. my credit score is in the low to mid 500's and i recently got a card from Orchard Bank. They give people with bad credit a second chance. Your limit will start out low, usually $300.00 but they do periodic checks to see if you deserve an increase.

Have you tried Capital One? They're normally pretty good about low credit customers; I got my very first card from them when I didn't exist (didn't have any credit whatsoever).

Otherwise, I've heard good things about Orchard bank, but never used them myself.

Major credit card issuers like Discover, American Express and Chase offer a credit card for bad credit holders. A 'shopping' card offers you an unsecured line of credit from specific sellers. Use these cards to increase your credit rating, since the credit bureaus will be informed about your timely payments.

When choosing a credit card for bad credit holders take care to see that the lender does not levy exorbitant charges. Unscrupulous issuers can charge a program fee, an account set up fee, and an annual card fee etc. Authentic companies ask only for an annual fee and very little.

While searching online for an instant approval credit card for bad credit holders, you may mistakenly apply for an unsecured card that is really a 'shopping' card. This card is similar to a normal credit card, but you are allowed to buy only from select sellers, online shops or catalogues. Though it is a good idea if your credit record is bad, you cannot use it for shopping at local retail stores, restaurants, or to book airline or motel reservations.

There are unsecured Visa and Mastercard credit cards that cater to people with bad credit or no credit history. They start from a $250 limit to $500 but they are increased periodically depending on how you pay your bills, etc. You can get these cards even with a credit score of 400.

The key to raising your credit score is as follows:
1. Open a line of credit
2. Be meticulous about paying your bills on time - always
3. Don't open to many lines of credit but have a good variety of credit lines/loans (e.g. credit card, mortgage, etc). At this point, you are not ready for a mortgage so continue to work on increasing your score to at least 620 or 630.

List of credit cards catering to poor credit.

Capitol one is really good about working with people who have bad/no credit. However, you do need to be careful because one late payment can hurt you a lot and they tend to hesitate on taking it off your record even if you catch back up on your payments. I would recommend getting one to build you credit but I would say you don't need to spend anymore than you can't pay off each month.
