Are there any credit cards for teens? I've already got a pre paid debit card which I pay for mjyself, but it doesn't help at all with my credit score. I have a steady source of income and am financially responsible for myself, so are there any that I can get by myself? I'm fifteen. I don't want to be put on my parents account, as they already have bad credit, and that will affect me, and if I do something wrong, I want it to be just me that gets the brunt.

Also, I don't plan on making any big purchases, just enough to build my score. A few things here and there that I have money enough for already. |

Ask your bank if they have a parental co-sign program.
My parent's bank did and I had my first credit card at 15. I paid the bills and the bank said my parents would only see them if I failed to pay the bill each month. The card came with a passport photo laminated to it as a security measure.... (It predated digital photos.)
When I turned 18, my credit limit was raised and my parents were removed as cosigners.
The bank had this program as a way to start teenagers on *their* credit card before entering the free for all of college campuses. 30+ years later, I still have this account. |

You should contact a local credit union to find out about such an option. Sometimes they allow kids to have credit cards and checking accounts, but usually only under special circumstances. Yours may count as one.
Consider the possibility of a credit card that is secured by a savings deposit. I know that USBank offers one, but I think there are others as well. For example, you'd deposit 200.00 in savings, and you could charge up to that amount.

I don't think there are any for teens. I suggest that you keep practicing with the debit card. It sounds like you care about financial responsibility. You CAN get a savings account at your age, so use it. Having a parent cosign your savings won't hurt you. Earn some interest.
You won't need a credit history for a long time. If you need a car, save up and buy a used one outright. If you go to college, get a credit card there and use it wisely. Live at home or in the dorms and by the time you need an apartment, you'll have a few years of credit history. You don't want to screw this up, as I can tell you know. Buy only what you can pay off each month, and you'll have a reasonable credit history when you need it for a good car or apartment. |

Try credit unions they are really felxable with teens but no matter what you do you will need a adult signature. So don't go to a bank couse the adult will have to be a parent or leagal gardian. At Credit Unions you just need some one over 18 that you trust to co-sign in till you 18th birthday when you can get them off the account (pick someone who has a good cridit score). There are a few visa program available but agin you need a parent |

go to wellsfargo or bank of america or any bank that u want, talk to one of their ppl they would love to sign u up for a credit card cuz, they could get so much money from u (Interest)
they would tell u all the good things about credit cards n hook u right away, they just wanna suck money out of you.

-YOU spending money that YOU DON'T HAVE
-Can be addicting
-When the bill comes u will have to pay MORE than what it really cost u.
-Credit cards r just a hassle
-could also be a victim of identity theft, ppl could use ur card and buy tons of stuff by ur name, or get ur personal info.
that is y it is better just to pay with cash than with a card because u r just gonna have to pay it anyways.

You sound like a really responsible person and the prepaid debit card is a great idea.

Being put on your parents account will not affect your credit at all.
It is still illegal to issue debt to anyone under the age of 18 in both the US and Canada and most other countries, and this is unlikely to change for a while.
If you are financially responsible and have a steady income, why do you need a credit card? I really don't recommend you get one, it's best to learn to pay for everything with only money that you actually have instead of creating debt for yourself.... as it's very common to sooner than later find yourself spending money you don't have and drawing more and more debt. Bad idea! |
